Barrington approves $1.87M in road, sewer work

Barrington officials Thursday approved $1.87 million in road and sewer projects for 2011 as well as $23,600 in landscaping to complete the village’s Route 14 Gateway Improvement Project.

Trustees awarded the road and sewer contract to the lowest responsible bidder, Berger Excavating Contractors Inc. of Wauconda.

The lower bid from Copenhaver Construction was rejected by village staff because they determined that Copenhaver was not pre-qualified with the Illinois Department of Transportation and did not have sufficient experience with similar projects.

The project put out for bid included various improvements to Hillside Avenue, Eastern Avenue, Walnut Road, Grove Avenue and the Pickwick subdivision.

Eight companies bid on the project, with Copenhaver’s coming in at approximately $2.30 million and Berger’s at $2.37 million.

When the proposed replacement of a water main on Eastern Avenue was dropped due to insufficent funding in this year’s budget, Berger’s bid fell to $1.87 million.

The remaining work includes a new storm sewer, water main and pavement replacement on Hillside Avenue from Grove Avenue to 500 feet east of Highland Avenue; a water main replacement in the east alley of the Pickwick subdivision; pavement, curb and water main replacements on Walnut Road; and resurfacing of Grove Avenue from Wisconsin to Illinois avenues.

The landscaping contract for the Route 14 Gateway Improvement Project was awarded to Trillium Native Landscapes Inc. of Barrington, whose bid came in more than $3,000 below that of Applied Ecological Services Inc. of Brodhead, Wis.

The project involves landscaping the center median of Route 14 at the eastern entrance to the village near Makray Memorial Golf Club.

Trillium’s estimate of maintenance costs for the first five years after installation also came in dramatically below the Wisconsin firm’s.

Trillium estimated the cost of upkeep from 2012 through 2016 to be $7,825, while Applied Ecological Services estimated the cost for the same period to be $28,270.
