Schaumburg man's skydiving death accidental

The sky diving death of a 30-year-old Schaumburg man May 8 in downstate Dayton has been ruled an accident, with investigators ruling out the possibility of equipment failure.

Karthik Balakrishnan was pronounced dead at 4:45 p.m. on the day of the accident, about a mile and a half east of the Skydive Chicago Dayton facility. Dayton is just northeast of Ottawa, about 80 miles southwest of Chicago.

The LaSalle County Coroner's office Friday said Balakrishnan died from multiple injuries as a result of an accidental parachuting mishap. Determination of the cause of death was pending for two and a half weeks while the LaSalle County Sheriff's office and Federal Aviation Administration investigated.

LaSalle County Sheriff Tom Templeton said the FAA determined that there had been no equipment failure. Witnesses reported Balakrishnan's parachute opening properly, but shortly afterward he went into several radical turns, losing control and crashing to the ground, authorities said.
