Schaumburg road, sewer projects approved

Schaumburg trustees got the steamrollers rolling for the construction season ahead by approving more than half a million dollars in road, pavement and sewer improvement projects Tuesday.

However, the most costly of these projects is for preliminary engineering of a major reconstruction of Walnut Lane that won’t actually happen for two or three more years, and for which federal money will pay half of this phase.

Trustees approved a $267,027 contract with Civiltech Engineering of Itasca for design engineering for the reconstruction of the nearly half-mile stretch of Walnut Lane between Golf and Bode roads.

Half the cost of the engineering contract will be paid for by federal funds received and distributed by the Northwest Municipal Conference, said Steve Weinstock, Schaumburg’s director of engineering and public works.

Federal money is later expected to pay 70 percent of the next phase of engineering just before construction itself, Weinstock added.

Walnut Lane qualifies for the federal funding because of its importance to the flow of local traffic.

Though the actual work on Walnut Lane won’t take place for at least another couple of years, when it does it will be a major undertaking requiring detours for all motorists who don’t actually live on the road.

Trustees also awarded a $228,549 contract to A. Lamp Concrete Contractors for pavement reconstruction in and around the two older hangars, D and E, at Schaumburg Regional Airport.

Weinstock said this project is intended to bring the pavement at these older hangars up to the same standard as the newer parts of the airport.

This pavement reconstruction will involve a relatively small portion of the overall airport.

Lastly, trustees approved an $11,964 change order to Civiltech’s engineering of storm sewer improvements along Braintree Drive. A revision of Civiltech’s initial engineering was required after poor weather last fall prevented the storm sewer improvements from taking place, Weinstock said.
