Woman drives into Addison condo

An Addison woman attempting to drive out of an apartment parking lot Monday afternoon pinballed her way first into her own building, then into the living room of a nearby condominium and finally into a tree, officials said.

“She went forward across the lot, over a parking bumper, over a curb and into (the condominium),” said Addison Fire District Batallion Chief Roy Charvat. “It was unoccupied, thank God.”

Fire officials said the woman, described as elderly, crashed her Chevy Malibu through the sliding glass doors of a unit on the 900 block of North Rohlwing Road at about 2:20 p.m. Monday, leaving the unit uninhabitable. “Apparently she doesn't know exactly what happened,” said Addison Police Sgt. Roger Saran.

Police said the woman first backed into her apartment unit, causing minor damage to the building, then drove more than 200 feet into the condominium, before finally crashing into a tree after reversing out of the condominium.

“She must have been traveling at a very high rate of speed,” Charvat said.

The woman received “very minor” injuries at some point during the incident and was treated at the scene by paramedics, officials said.

A building inspector was at the scene Monday afternoon and the condominium unit was deemed uninhabitable after firefighters shored up the building, Charvat said.

Police said neither alcohol nor drugs played a factor in the crash.
