Two former Des Plaines chiefs have visit

Retired Des Plaines Police Chief Joseph Kozenczak recently paid a surprise visit to retired Des Plaines Police Chief Leroy (Lee) Alfano and his wife, Jan, while visiting Prescott, Ariz., with his family.

The Alfanos, who live on a ranch with their horses, Rudy, Woody and Blitz, enjoy riding and have been advocates for preserving natural trails for horseback riding throughout the Prescott area.

Alfano was Des Plaines chief from 1978-1985, with Kozenczak serving from 1985-1989.

The Alfanos relocated to Prescott after Lee’s retirement. The two friends and chiefs shared many stories of their past experiences in Des Plaines.

Jan Alfano, meanwhile, has dedicated and devoted numerous hours to the Yavapai Trails Association as an advocate of the development of nonmotorized trails that are enjoyed by many equestrians throughout the Prescott area.

As a result the “Jan Alfano Trail” was constructed in 2000 and commemorates the founding member. The trail is part of Prescott’s Mile High Trail System and is part of the larger YTA-envisioned Prescott Circle Trail. It travels into the eastern portion of Pioneer Park, where another trail traverses through the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University campus to the Willow Lake recreation area. Mrs. Alfano has served as a longtime president of YTA.
