One injured in Elgin ambulance crash

An ambulance on the way to a call was struck by another vehicle Friday afternoon in Elgin, resulting in one injury, authorities said.

The three-person paramedic crew was responding to a call for assistance from someone with a diabetic problem when the ambulance was struck by a Chevy pickup truck around 5:10 p.m. at the intersection of Dundee and Keep avenues. A fire department lieutenant, sitting on the passenger’s side, was injured and taken to Sherman Hospital, said Assistant Chief Dave Schmidt of the Elgin Fire Department.

The ambulance was traveling north on Dundee with its lights and sirens activated, but it’s possible the driver of the truck, coming from the side street, didn’t see the ambulance when going on to Dundee, Schmidt said.

A citation was issued for the driver of the truck, he said.
