Buffalo Grove student charged with attempted murder

A Buffalo Grove High School freshman was charged with attempted murder after he stabbed a 25-year-man outside a McDonald's across from the high school, Arlington Heights police said Friday.

The two exchanged gang signs before the altercation which occurred about 1 p.m. on Thursday, said Sgt. Mike Hernandez of the Arlington Heights Police Department.

“They made eye contact and the victim got out of the car,” Hernandez said. “Then the suspect chased him down and stabbed him.”

The suspect chased the victim for short bit before stabbing him in a grassy area by the restaurant's front door.

After the stabbing, the 15-year-old-suspect fled, driving west on Dundee Road. Police caught up with the car at Dundee and Route 53 where the suspect and two other juveniles were taken into custody, according to a statement released by the Arlington Heights Police Department.

The suspect will remain in jail until his next court date on Tuesday, April 19. The victim, who was driven to Northwest Community Hospital, was in stable condition on Friday.

The student got the paring knife used in the stabbing in the desk drawer of a Buffalo Grove High School staff member, said Northwest Suburban High School District 214 Spokeswoman Venetia Miles.

“Appropriate disciplinary action has been taken,” said Miles about the staff member, declining to specify what that action was. She said the staff member was not a teacher.

District 214 officials sent an e-mail to parents on Thursday night assuring them students who stayed on campus were safe.

“You may have heard that an incident occurred today off campus involving BG students,” the e-mail states. “Please be assured that at no time was the safety of any of the BG students on campus jeopardized.”

Miles said District 214 officials are still investigating the stabbing.
