Challenger Schmidt wins in Glendale Heights

H. William Schmidt, a former school board member in Marquardt District 15, has defeated incumbent Ed Pope in the race for the District 1 seat on the Glendale Heights village board.

According to unofficial vote totals, Schmidt garnered 177 votes on Tuesday night, with all five precincts counted. Pope got 124 votes.

Schmidt, 68, has lived in Glendale Heights for 38 years. His wife, Marie, is the village clerk.

During the campaign, Schmidt said he entered the race because he wanted to be a voice for the residents of District 1 as well as the larger Glendale Heights community. He said his 13 years on the District 15 school board gave him experience with budgeting and project management that will be an asset to the village as it faces future challenges.

Pope, 49, a trustee since 2001, said during the campaign that he was proud to have helped the village government remain fiscally responsible while serving its residents.
