Naperville North counselor indicted on sex charges

The DuPage County grand jury has indicted a Naperville North High School counselor accused of sexually abusing a 16-year-old student, according to court records made public Friday.

John Carbonaro, 33, of the 3S600 block of Melcher Avenue, Warrenville, was indicted Thursday on eight counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. If convicted of the felony charges, he could face probation or up to seven years in prison, authorities said.

The indictment accuses Carbonaro of molesting a female student at his home between July and October last year while in a “position of trust, authority or supervision” over the alleged victim.

The allegations came to light last month after Naperville North officials said they learned from a third party that Carbonaro was involved in an inappropriate relationship with a student.

The counselor was subsequently put on paid administrative leave at North — where he’s worked for five years and also coached girls golf and softball — and suspended from his part-time job as a range officer at Sportsman’s Park in Naperville.

Carbonaro, who has a March 23 court date, surrendered on preliminary charges in February and was released after putting up a $20,000 cash bond. He “vehemently denies” the charges, according to his attorney.
