Streamwood man accused of selling Bernie Madoff’s ID

A 43-year-old Streamwood man has been arrested on allegations he sold disgraced financier Bernie Madoff’s prison identification card through an online auction company, police said.

David J. Fisk, of the 100 block of Crestwood Drive, is charged with theft under $300 after an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice determined he had sold Madoff’s prison identification card on eBay, authorities said.

Officials from the Federal Bureau of Prisons noticed in January someone had bought the ID card on eBay and tracked Fisk as the seller, authorities said.

Federal prison ID cards are the property of the federal government and not allowed to leave the penitentiary, said Dan Barnes of the Streamwood Police Department.

A Justice Department investigator told police that Fisk had served a federal prison sentence in Butler, N.C., where Madoff also is serving time. Fisk was released from prison last July and moved to Streamwood.

When questioned by police, Fisk said he obtained the ID card from another Butler inmate who owed him money, authorities said. He’s accused of selling the card in September for about $200.

Fisk was released on bond pending a March 23 court hearing.
