Plenty of soup for you at Carol Stream restaurant

Turkey chili. Crab bisque. Wild mushroom. Mulligatawny. Jambalaya.

Those are the specialties of the fictional “Soup Nazi” from the “Seinfeld” TV show that people waited in line to enjoy, despite the verbal abuse they faced from the angry soup maker.

This week, a Carol Stream restaurant is re-creating that experience by offering those soups and others during its annual “No Soup For You” week. On Monday, an actor portraying the “Soup Nazi” served up soup to customers at Peppercorns Restaurant, 877 Geneva Road.

The promotion started three years ago after the Soup Nazi episode of Seinfeld came on one of the restaurant's televisions. Employees thought having an event surrounding that episode would help promote the restaurant's soups, said owner Paul Barthel.

“We started kicking around the discussion,” Barthel said. “We're known for our soups, and we think we put out a pretty good product.”

Barthel is giving out T-shirts with the Soup Nazi's likeness for “Seinfeld” fans who correctly answer questions about the show. The Soup Nazi episode is being shown on a rotation on one of the restaurant's televisions.

Free samples will be offered throughout the promotion, which lasts through Saturday.

Jonathan Lamendola, an actor portraying the Soup Nazi, likely will make appearances during lunchtimes this week, Barthel said.

“It's a chance to laugh and sample all the soups from that show,” Barthel said.

The restaurant is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
