New CEO at Provena St. Joseph Hospital

Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin has named a new president and CEO to replace the man who resigned Friday after six months on the job.

Steve Scogna, St. Joe's current president and CEO, has accepted the position of chief financial officer at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.

Dr. Eugene McMahon, 49, now serving as St. Joe's chief medical officer, becomes the new president and CEO on March 25. Scogna remains in Elgin until then to ensure a smooth transition with McMahon, Provena spokeswoman Lisa Lagger said.

McMahon has been at St. Joe's since 2010. Previously, he was the chief medical officer at Southcoast Hospitals Group in Massachusetts. Before that, McMahon served in several executive leadership positions at St. Francis Hospital/Covenant Healthcare in Milwaukee.

He began his pathology practice in 1994, graduated from the Georgetown University School of Medicine and holds an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

“Dr. McMahon's appointment is in keeping with our vision to make our Elgin ministry a physician-driven organization focused on ensuring PSJH is the place where doctors want to practice,” Provena Health Chief Operating Officer Anthony Filer said in a prepared statement.

Scogna's career with Provena spans nearly 10 years — he was system vice president of finance for eight years before becoming St. Joe's president and CEO, officials said. He also served as interim president and CEO for six months, after then-president and CEO Bill Brown left last February.

“Hospital finance is not only an area in which he has vast knowledge and noted expertise, but is also his preferred career path,” Lagger said in explaining why Scogna's departure.
