Academic Elite hoops team sets tryout date

The Academic Elite 17U AAU boys basketball team will hold tryouts for the 2011 season on Sunday, March 6 at Aurora Christian High School.

The Academic Elite 17U team is targeted at high academic qualifying student-athletes who are hoping to play college basketball. Athletes with a 3.2 or higher GPA and/or a 23 or higher ACT score are candidates to join the program.

The program is located in the western suburbs and all practices and training will take place in local area gyms.

Ryan Paradise, the head boys basketball coach at Marmion and a former high school star at Naperville Central, is the head coach of the team.

Last year, at the 16U level, the team won the Baylor Youth SuperRegional and the team’s goal this season is to qualify for the AAU national tournament in Orlando, Fla.

Tryouts will be held the first two weeks of March and the team will play in 4-5 tournaments during March, April and May.

Some of the local players from last year’s team include Matt Chaltin (Bartlett), Ryan Coyle (St. Francis), Charlie Fisher (St. Charles East), Zach Roswold (St. Francis), Cole Gardner (Batavia), Michael Rueffer (Batavia) and Myles Walters (Plainfield East).

Cost of the program will be determined after tryout selection is completed.

The March 6th tryouts will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Aurora Christian, 2255 Sullivan Road in Aurora.
