Still no skating at Batavia’s Depot Pond

The red “no skating” flag will continue to fly at Depot Pond in Batavia this weekend.

Batavia Park District workers tried Friday to clear snow from last week’s blizzard, but the weight of the snow has cracked the ice. The holes must refreeze before equipment can be brought onto the ice, according to the park district.

Other areas that needed clearing took precedence over Depot Pond, including clearing parking lots and entrances to various facilities.

If the pond is safe next week, workers will clear the snow and resurface the pond. Unlike ground-based rinks, the district won’t flood it with water to recondition the surface, as that would add weight to the ice.
