Buffalo Grove homeowner returns to find smoke billowing out of window

Buffalo Grove firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire that left a house uninhabitable Thursday night, fire officials said.

The Buffalo Grove Fire Department was called at 4:23 p.m. to a home on Chestnut Terrace after the homeowner pulled into the driveway and saw smoke coming out of an upstairs window, Battalion Chief Joseph Wieser said.

The fire started in an upstairs bedroom, Wieser said. The fire broke a copper pipe inside the house, causing significant water damage, according to Wieser.

Firefighters had to shut off the water and electricity in the home before they could finish putting out the blaze. As a result, the homeowners are temporarily displaced.

No one was hurt.

Wieser estimates the fire and water damage at $60,000.
