Rockton Hononegah’s too much for Buffalo Grove

Buffalo Grove just might have caught Rockton-Hononegah at the wrong time Monday when the two teams met in the opening round of the Charger Classic at Dundee-Crown High School.

The Lady Indians were coming off a two-game losing streak — after winning 12 in a row.

Hononegah got back on stride with a 72-42 triumph, getting 32 points from inside force Brea Edwards and 20 from perimeter ace Lindsay Carroll.

The Bison (2-9) will face Johnsburg (9-5) in today’s quarterfinal of the consolation bracket.

“They (Hononegah) have a lot of balance,” said Bison coach Pat Dudle. “They have a good inside game and they can shoot from the outside. Defensively, they put a lot of pressure on you on the outside.”

Carroll, who hit 5 3-pointers, is headed to play basketball at Western Illinois, the same school where BG guard KC Dunne (8 points) will play softball.

Dunne led the Bison with 5 assists and shared team rebounding honors with sophomore Bailey North (4 apiece), who scored 10 points.

Other top scorers for the Bison were Alanna Zawlocki (11 points), Emily Cho (7) and Andrea DiPrima (5), who had the team’s only 3-pointer.

Layups by North and Cho had the Bison tied at 4-4 early.

They were still close late in the quarter when North’s nice move under the basket for a bank shot brought them to within 12-10.

But the Lady Indians (13-2), whose only losses were in the Sterling Invite last week to powers Montini and Peoria Richwoods, took off on a 21-2 run.

Edwards, who played for Rockford Boylan the last three years before transferring to Hononegah, was 6 shy of her season-high 38 set against South Elgin earlier this season.

“She’s a ton,” Dudle said. “She can shoot outside and she’s very strong inside. We knew we were going to play good teams here.”

Hononegah coach Randy Weibel didn’t like his team’s rebounding early in the game.

“But once we got into the flow, we started rebounding better and running the floor better,” he said. “That’s how we like to play. The big difference is that we started making shots. We didn’t shoot well against Montini or Richwoods.”
