Rosemont's red-light trap needs to go

Comments by the four suburban mayors on the front page of the Daily Herald Nov. 18 are on target. True, Chicago has its flaws but it is a City that Works. Mayor Richard M. Daily has worked hard to make O'Hare into a first class airport and has been a friend of the suburbs. As he retires let's hope that he will remain honorary Mayor of Chicagoland. I hope others will join me in saying to him, “Thank you for your service.”

Let us hope that Mayor Stephens of Rosemont takes his own comment to heart and does something about the miserable misapplication of photo enforcement at the intersection of Higgins and Mannheim.

We need honest photo enforcement at critical intersections that will help eradicate rolling stops for right turns but the application at Higgins and Mannheim is being used to rob motorists. The existing turn signal with only yellow and green arrows could control turns but the sign that says “No turn on red” traps the motorists because after an extremely short yellow it is turned off and trapped motorists are charged $100.

Hundreds of cars legally turn right on red everyday at that intersection. If Rosemont ever gets a casino we will need to watch out because if the same governing philosophy holds the odds will be rigged against the public. The intersection needs a turn signal with red, yellow and green arrows and no sign about turns.
