Volunteers needed for District 117 International Fair

Community High School District 117 is organizing a spring International Fair to promote diversity, one of the goals outlined in the district's 2010-15 Strategic Plan. The fair, which is sponsored by Lakes and Antioch high schools' World Languages departments, will require help from several volunteers.

“We are looking for people to make this a success,” said Rachel Morales, World Languages Department chair at Lakes Community High School.

Students and community members are invited to participate in the event by providing a cultural dish and/or putting on a performance or demonstration that represents a specific ethnicity or region. Anyone with interest should contact Morales at rmorales@lakeseagles.com or (847) 838-7100, ext. 8044, before Tuesday, Jan. 11. Participants will be expected to attend at least one informational meeting at the end of January.

Other organizers include Jamie Ellinger, the department chair at Antioch Community High School, the ACHS Diversity Club, and other district faculty members. Morales, who experienced a similar fair when she was in high school, said the event has been an idea for a few years now and is finally coming together.

The district's diversity goal states: “As District 117 and the world become more culturally, economically, and politically diverse, we are committed to developing students who are knowledgeable and capable of recognizing differences and acting in a way that demonstrates acceptance, tolerance, and democratic principles…”

The fair will take place from 5-9 p.m. on Sunday, March 12, in the athletic wing of LCHS, 1600 Eagle Way, Lake Villa. More information will be available at lakeseagles.com and sequoits.com.
