Weather delays Elgin's City Skate opening

The warm temperatures and rain that poured down in the area this week have postponed Elgin's City Skate outdoor ice rink's opening for the season.

Both factors “severely compromised” the ice's condition, forcing authorities to delay the rink's opening until noon Dec. 4, according to the city's website.

The city has decided to make a day of it though, and is offering free skate rentals to coincide with its holiday tree lighting ceremony at 5 p.m. nearby at Civic Center Plaza.

As well, registration for skating lessons runs through Wednesday, Dec. 2, at the Centre of Elgin. Lessons last three weeks and take place on Saturday mornings starting Dec. 4.

Prices range between $41 and $59, with ice skate rental included.

City Skate is within the plaza between city hall and the Hemmens Cultural Center.

It remains open through Feb. 27, but may close during bad weather.
