Holiday light recycling program in Hoffman Estates
The Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County and the Village of Hoffman Estates are offering a free holiday light recycling program.
Hoffman Estates residents can bring holiday string lighting and extension cords to the village hall lobby, 1900 Hassell Road, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Dec. 1 through Jan. 21.
Last year, the Village collected 413 total pounds of holiday lights.
“Through this recycling program, materials will be reclaimed, reprocessed, made into new products and kept out of the landfills making the season much brighter,” Mary Allen, the waste agency's recycling and education director, said in a news release.
Elgin Recycling Inc. collects the material at its Palatine facility, where the strands are chopped, separated, baled and sold foundries and mills.
