DUI arrest prompts 911 call from squad car

text size: AAA

A Lake in the Hills woman arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol called 911 early Friday from the back of an Elgin squad car to complain an officer was taking her to the station and she didn't know why, according to police.

Andrea Eichenold, 50, of the 800 block Willow Street in Lake in the Hills was pulled over around 1:30 a.m. in the 400 block of Dundee Avenue in Elgin after an officer noticed she was driving erratically, police said.

When the officer asked Eichenold how much she had to drink, Eichenold denied she had been drinking, according to police.

When she got out of her van, the vehicle rolled forward because Eichenold left it in drive, eventually stopping when it hit a concrete barrier, according to the police report.

After putting the vehicle in park, Eichenold failed three sobriety tests, police said, before refusing to take a Breathalyzer test because her lawyer was not present. The officer arrested her and put her in the squad car.

“When they were en route (to the police station), she was using her cell phone calling 911, saying police had detained her for some reason she was unsure of,” Elgin police spokeswoman Sue Olafson said.

The officer took the phone from her for the rest of the ride.

Eichenold was charged with DUI and improper lane usage. She was released after posting $100 cash bond. She is due in court Nov 16.

A phone number for Eichenold was not working.
