Summer no reason to forget Sunday Mass

It's a mad dash to the finish line of summer, now that we've hit August on the calendar. It's the last chance for vacations and a break from normal routines.

Apparently, some people like a break in routine during the entire summer. This was somewhat of a revelation to me.

Call me clueless, naive, or oblivious. It appears all would be accurate, based on what others have said after I told them about my revelation.

It occurred where revelations are supposed to take place - during Sunday Mass. Rev. Martins C. Emeh, pastor of St. Peter Church in Geneva, was delivering a sermon with an underlying message about the discipline and commitment of being a Christian.

Interwoven in that message was the fact that not every parishioner attends Mass each Sunday. Everyone knows that. It makes sense that someone may miss a Sunday on occasion. But then the good padre said this: "Some families do not attend church during the summer, in effect taking the summer off."

The pastor should know. He's in charge of the entire congregation and has to keep an eye on the financial books. When weekly donations dip during the summer, there's a reason.

I had never heard of such a phenomenon, or noticed anyone practicing it - probably because my mother would have bonked me on the head if I had entertained such a silly thought.

It is yet another occurrence I don't understand, reminding me I am indeed getting older. Younger folks out there may not want to hear this, but skipping church through the summer months simply would not fly years ago.

Primed for production: Anyone who knows Nancy Hanna knows she is not one to lack energy. But she seems pumped up more than usual these days, and who can blame her?

"The Psalm of Edie Catz," a play Hanna wrote 10 years ago when living in Texas, will be performed the next two weekends at Geneva Underground Playhouse.

Hanna, who operates "forword" marketing, will also have the pleasure of seeing her daughter E. Faye Hanna direct the adult drama.

Nancy gets excited about acting workshops and various community events she is involved with, but she's entering another stratosphere in getting ready for this play.

Play times and ticket info is available at genevaundergroundplayhouse.com.

Those aching teeth: Yes, I have a sweet tooth. That's been well documented in this column.

On occasion, something that sounds great ends up being so sweet it makes my teeth ache. That's the best way to describe the Pecan Pie blizzard from Dairy Queen.

How do you drive by a Dairy Queen when its marquee lures you in by boasting of a blizzard made of stuff from your favorite pie? You don't, that's how.

Glowing atop my head: While taking a walk, my wife and I spotted an elderly lady struggling to move her garbage can to the curb. So I helped.

The nice lady said, "You are an angel, I can see the halo glowing from your head."

It confirmed what I have been trying to tell my wife - that I do indeed have angelic headgear.
