Elk Grove man gets 3 years for attack

A 33-year-old Elk Grove Village man was sentenced to three years in prison last week in exchange for his guilty plea to a charge of aggravated domestic battery, a class 2 felony that carries a sentence of three to seven years.

Authorities say Brendan Callaghan, of the 700 block of Gloucester Drive, was drunk on Jan. 6 when he attacked a 69-year-old woman by knocking her to the floor and attempting to choke her with a power cord. The victim fled her residence, pursued by Callaghan, who pushed her into the snow causing injuries to her head and back, prosecutors said.

Callaghan received credit for the 197 days he has spent in custody. His background includes probation for a 1994 conviction for possession of a controlled substance and a one-year conditional discharge for resisting a peace officer in 1998. He served 11 days in jail following a domestic battery conviction in 2009 and was ordered to undergo drug and alcohol evaluation, authorities said.
