Who runs Land and Lakes landfill?

The operators of the controversial former Land and Lakes landfill in Buffalo Grove are not new to the industry.

The family-owned company started in 1966 as excavators and expanded into waste disposal, running several landfills around the state. It is based in Park Ridge.

Company President James J. Cowhey Jr. is also mayor of Lake Forest, following his election in 2009. He previously served as alderman for six years.

Cowhey did not return repeated phone calls for comment from the Daily Herald for this report and declined to be interviewed when a reporter approached him in person before a recent Lake Forest village board meeting.
