Chicago man pleads not guilty in Elgin robbery

A 24-year-old Chicago man charged with robbing a pedestrian at gunpoint on Elgin's east side in April pleaded not guilty Thursday.

Andres Oquendo, of the 4300 block of West Shakespeare Avenue, was arraigned in Kane County court on two counts of armed robbery, a Class X felony, court records show.

Authorities have said Oquendo approached the victim about 9:20 p.m. April 7 on the 600 block of Slade Avenue in Elgin and yelled, "Give me everything you have," in Spanish while pointing a gun.

The victim then threw his wallet on the ground, and Oquendo retrieved $395, police said.

Oquendo was arrested at the home of his girlfriend and daughter in Elgin a short time later, after the victim gave police the license plate number for a Jeep Liberty that the robber drove from the crime scene. Authorities said a .45-caliber gun also was found underneath a car seat in the Jeep.

Oquendo, who has 18 prior arrests and three felony convictions, remained in the county jail Thursday with bail set at $150,000, according to the sheriff's website. His next court date is July 23.
