Palatine man accused of second home invasion in six weeks

Even if a Palatine man charged with sexual assault comes up with the required 10 percent of the $50,000 bail a Cook County judge set for him Tuesday, he won't leave Cook County Jail.

That's because when he was arrested, 19-year-old Scott Evangelista was already out on bond for a crime authorities say he committed six weeks ago.

Evangelista, of the 1000 block of West Hunting Drive, was charged with home invasion and criminal sexual assault of a teenage girl, which Cook County Sheriff's Police say he committed over the weekend.

If convicted of criminal sexual assault, Evangelista faces between four and 15 years in prison. If convicted of the class X home invasion, he faces six to 30 years in prison.

The complaining witness was asleep in her Arlington Heights home Saturday morning when she awoke to Evangelista calling her name, said a sheriff's spokesman in a prepared statement released Tuesday. According to the release, he told her he had been kicked out of a suburban halfway house, then raped her and fell asleep. Eventually the teenage girl got him to leave and informed relatives what had happened, authorities said.

Evangelista was arrested during a traffic stop Saturday, authorities said.

Palatine police arrested the defendant six weeks ago and charged him with home invasion, said a spokeswoman for the Cook County state's attorney's office. At the time, Cook County Circuit Court Judge Kay Hanlon set his bail at $50,000.

That case, and his current case, are pending in Rolling Meadow' Third Municipal District, where Evangelista next appears on May 21.
