Investigators are trying to determine what sparked a Wednesday afternoon basement fire that caused an estimated $7,500 damage to a house in Winfield. Firefighters responded about 2:14 p.m. to the blaze along Cottonwood Drive. The fire, which started in a basement bedroom, was extinguished within minutes. No one was injured. While flames were contained to the bedroom, there was smoke damage throughout the house. Still, the home is habitable, officials said.
