Wheaton fire victim identified as college student

A 28-year-old Wheaton College graduate student was identified by the school as the victim of this weekend's fatal fire.

According to the college's Web site, Mark Groesch died Saturday as a result of a fire at his off-campus apartment on the 1700 block of East 22nd Street in Wheaton.

Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the blaze. Groesch was unable to escape the fire, which also injured two others. Those victims injuries were minor, authorities said.

Groesch, a Springfield native, was pursuing a master's degree in historical and systematic theology at the college. A memorial service is planned for this evening in his hometown.

While the DuPage County coroner's office still hasn't officially released his identity, Groesch's family released an obituary to a Springfield newspaper.
