Naperville man charged with street racing in fatal crash
A Naperville man has been charged with aggravated street racing in connection with a May 3 crash that killed a 20-year-old driver, authorities said Wednesday. Yair Lopez-Laviano, 21, of the 2600 block of Whitehall Lane, was indicted by a DuPage County grand jury on Tuesday. He is charged in connection with the death of Matthew McMahon, also of Naperville.

Ex-Geneva High student gets probation for email threat
Daniel T. Diomedes, 19, who pleaded guilty in earlier this year to sending an email to a third party that threatened a Geneva High School dean, is sentenced to 30 months probation and GPS monitoring. A 60-year-old Elgin man was arrested and charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty Wednesday after police found an estimated 60 dead cats and one dead dog in a van in his backyard. Judge to allow stress disorder testimony at Wheaton murder trial
A DuPage County judge will allow testimony that a Wheaton man has post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from a 1980s military accident when he stands trial on first-degree murder charges. Defense attorneys say the condition may have caused Michael Delaney to believe he was acting in self-defense when he allegedly stabbed neighbor Micheal Scalzo during a June 2009 confrontation in Wheaton.

Grant's Gomoll tackles cruel twist with a shot of love
During Week 3 of the football season, on Friday, Sept. 7 in Fox Lake, Grant's Chris Gomoll, a starting cornerback for the Bulldogs, ran to make a tackle after Wauconda running back David Starkey caught a short pass. Despite good form on the play, he broke his neck in three places. Last weekend, Gomoll walked under his own power into Grant's football stadium, completing the first leg of his recovery thanks to great support from his parents, Angie and Ray, his brother Ethan, and his schoolmates.

Pierzynski followed with an RBI double.The Sox appeared to be happy with the 3 runs, but with Konerko on third base and Pierzynski on second with only one out, Alexei Ramirez and Dewayne Wise grounded out to end what could have been a blowout first inning.And as the Detroit Tigers rallied from a 4-1 deficit to defeat Kansas City 5-4 at Comerica Park, the White Sox failed to keep pace.The Sox stopped hitting after the first inning, outside of Ramirez’s run-scoring double with two outs in the fifth inning to give them a 4-3 lead.“We needed home runs today,” Ventura said. “We did everything else, but a home run would have been nice.”The Indians took advantage of a White Sox pitching staff that looks to be out of gas.Santiago and six Sox relief pitchers combined to issue 12 walks, sapping most of the excitement out of another small crowd of 20,166.“There were a lot of tough situations tonight,” Ventura said. “They were either looking for the strikeout or trying to make the perfect pitch.”sgregor@dailyherald.com

Burlington Central’s Heinz battles back to contribute
Anyone who has ever dealt with back pain can appreciate the comeback Burlington Central volleyball player Megan Heinz is making this season. According to Rockets coach Marv Leavitt, Heinz, a defensive specialist, made the varsity team last season as a junior but was unable to compete due to spondylolisthesis, a painful condition in which a vertebra slips out of place and presses on the bone beneath. Years of diving and jumping for volleyballs throughout grade school, club and high school had taken a toll. The only remedy in her case was surgery, which included the insertion of rods and pins.

Geneva rally stuns Kaneland
Late in the third game between Geneva and Kaneland Wednesday night a local photographer positioned herself on the Knights' side getting ready for photos of their postgame celebration. A few points later, the photographer had to hustle to the other end of the court as Kaneland's commanding lead quickly disappeared and it became evident it would be the Vikings getting the last laugh. It was that kind of back-and-forth match on Volley for the Cure night. Geneva scored 11 of the final 12 points, turning a 21-14 deficit in the deciding third game into a stunning 25-20, 19-25, 25-22 victory.

Sox’ Peavy admits extra day off helps
White Sox starter Jake Peavy is an old-school pitcher.Even with a rash of recent injuries, including a detached lat muscle in 2010 that threatened to end his career, Peavy still likes taking the ball every fifth day.The Sox have been giving first-year starters Chris Sale and Jose Quintana breaks throughout the season, and Quintana is actually being skipped from his next scheduled start, tonight against Tampa Bay at U.S. Cellular Field.Quintana is likely to start against David Price (18-5, 2.58) and the Rays on Sunday at the Cell, but the White Sox have been juggling the rotation almost daily and nothing is set in stone.Peavy starts tonight in the first of four big games against the Rays, and he’ll be working with an extra day of rest.“They just made a decision and just let me know,” Peavy said. “That’s how I found out about it. There was no dialogue. I do understand it. Any time you get an extra day this time of year, it helps.”Peavy leads the Sox’ staff with 203 innings, and he’s failed to reach the seventh inning his each of his last five starts. It's been an odd and challenging week for Lake Park's football program with the Ryder Cup being held at Medinah Country Club across the street from the school's East Campus. Ultimately it should be a profitable week. Lake Park coach Chris Roll had all hands on deck helping out with parking duty at three locations, Arlington Park racetrack in Arlington Heights, the East Branch Forest Preserve in Glendale Heights and at Medinah itself.

To be honest, I'm finding it a little difficult to arouse much hatred for the Europeans in the Ryder Cup this week. Look, I understand the whole European burden on our economy and how we're having trouble selling as many Big Macs to Norwegians as we'd like. But cross-pond bitterness over golf?
