‘A legacy of stability, growth and dedication’: Vernon Area library mourns loss of board president

The Vernon Area Public Library District community is mourning the loss of board President Marc Fenton, 73, a longtime Buffalo Grove resident who died Sept. 24.

An attorney, Fenton joined the library board in 2013. He served as vice president before being named president in 2019.

“He leaves behind a legacy of institutional stability, visionary growth and unwavering dedication,” the district said in an announcement of Fenton’s death.

Fenton is credited with steady leadership and unwavering concern for patron safety during the pandemic. Under his direction, the board authorized a project to create a drive-up window, which remains for patrons' convenience.

He guided the reconstitution of the Foundation for the Vernon Area Library District, a nonprofit partner that raises funding and support for the library.

He also led the successful recruitment and board appointment of library Executive Director Anne Rasmussen in 2022. Two years ago, he presided over the adoption of the library's strategic plan and was a force behind the proposed building renovation and expansion plan.

“Marc's leadership has been a reliable source of stability during times of great change for this library,” Rasmussen said in the announcement. “He balanced professional rigor with a genuine heart for this community.”

A proclamation in his honor will be read into the record at the Oct. 19 library board meeting.

The board will also discuss selecting and appointing a qualified district resident to fill his seat. The appointee will serve until May 16. Voters will select a replacement in the April 6 election.
