Services this week for retired priest, Mundelein seminary teacher

Funeral services for a retired suburban priest who also was a faculty member at the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein will be this week.

The Rev. August “Gus” J. Belauskas, 82, died July 17. He was a teacher and philosophy department chair at the seminary.

Visitation is scheduled to run from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at St. Gilbert Catholic Church, 301 E. Belvidere Road, Grayslake. A rosary service will begin at 6 p.m., followed by prayers at 7 p.m.

Visitation will resume at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the seminary’s Chapel of Immaculate Conception, 1000 E. Maple Ave., Mundelein. A funeral Mass will begin at 3 p.m.

Interment will be at the seminary’s cemetery.

A Chicago native, Belauskas was ordained in 1968, according to a news release from the Archdiocese of Chicago. He served as assistant pastor at Saints Faith, Hope and Charity Catholic Church in Winnetka and St. Alphonsus Liguori Church in Prospect Heights.

Belauskas then joined the faculty of the now-closed Niles College seminary before moving onto the Mundelein facility.

Belauskas also served as a weekend assistant priest for 40 years at St. Gilbert before retiring in 2017.
