Man gets 18 years for Oakbrook Center shooting

A man involved in a Christmastime shooting that injured several people at Oakbrook Center mall has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Steve L. Lane, 33, of Chicago, pleaded guilty Wednesday to one felony count of armed violence.

The shooting happened around 5:44 p.m. Dec. 23, 2021, on the Nordstrom wing of the Oak Brook mall.

Lane and Tyran Williams shot at each other after Williams had an argument with a man who was with Lane, while they were in line at Auntie Anne’s Pretzels. The argument was about comments made on social media that were perceived as disrespectful, prosecutors said at the time.

Williams was hit four times. A 43-year-old woman, a 25-year-old woman and a 47-year-old woman were struck once each in the lower body, and a 57-year-old man was grazed. An 18-year-old woman broke an ankle while trying to escape.

Lane ran off.

Shoppers and mall workers took cover in stores and restaurants, which were locked down for several hours as police searched the mall for Lane.

Williams was charged with aggravated discharge of a weapon and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. He posted a $100,000 bond and was released pretrial. Williams was killed in a shooting in March 2024 in Chicago before his case was resolved.

Lane has been held on $5 million bail in the DuPage County jail since his arrest.
