    Last October, toward the end of the girls volleyball season, Conant High school paid tribute to Peggy Scholten, who is retiring after 37 seasons as Cougars girls volleyball coach. One of the ways she was honored was by the re-naming of the long-running Early Bird Classic to the “Peggy Scholten Invite.” Two months later, Scholten had something else named for her — a day. Elk Grove Village Mayor Craig Johnson and the village trustees issued a proclamation at the December Elk Grove Village Board meeting honoring Scholten by proclaiming Tuesday, Dec. 17 “Peggy Scholten Day” in Elk Grove Village.

    After two impressive road wins over the weekend, Loyola’s men’s volleyball program earned its first No. 1 ranking in program history. The Ramblers, who were ranked No. 2 last week, defeated Sacred Heart on Friday and No. 13 Harvard on Saturday as No. 1 ranked Pepperdine lost Friday to No. 5 Long Beach State.

    Some of the top volleyball players in the country will come to the Northwest suburbs this summer when the MB Financial Park at Rosemont hosts the EVP Pro Beach Volleyball tour. The EVP Rocks Rosemont 2014 will kick off July 10 with amateur matches in several sports leading up the professional tournament Friday, July 18 and Saturday, July 19.

On Tuesday at IC Catholic Prep’s girls volleyball awards dinner, Field announced her retirement after 39 years as the Knights’ coach. She ranks sixth all-time on the Illinois High School Association victories list with 885, which includes a 25-15, 25-19 victory over Edwards County in the Class 2A championship in November.

    Toward the end of his junior boys volleyball season at Hersey, Mike Fuerst’s teammate mentioned there was an opening on his club team. Fuerst, whose interest in the sport began peaking at an early age when he was having fun learning the game, decided to join that club team. It turns out he was part of a team that made it to the nationals in Reno, Nevada. At those championships, college coaches noticed the skills of the middle blocker. Many liked what they saw and Fuerst liked what he saw in a school out east. The Hersey senior recently made a verbal commitment to play at the Division I level for Princeton University.

    University of Dubuque sophomore Klaudia Basierak (Grayslake Central) has been named first-team All-Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in women’s volleyball for the second straight year. The Spartans outside hitter finished the season with a team high 366 kills, 1,234 attack attempts, 367 points, and 14 double-doubles (kills-digs).

    Jenna Radtke finished her high school career with Daily Herald all-area recognition, putting down 319 kills and 114 solo blocks as a senior for Stevenson girls volleyball coach Tim Crow. She has started her college career earning more recognition. The native of Buffalo Grove, who did not begin playing volleyball until her sophomore year of high school, has been selected to the Mid-American Conference All-Freshman team along with teammate Mary Grace Kelly.

    Jacobs junior Kassie Kasper impressed the North Carolina State women’s volleyball staff during her first unofficial campus visit last July. N.C. State, in turn, impressed Kasper during her second unofficial visit to Raleigh last weekend. Realizing she had found the right college fit, the 17-year old Algonquin resident called Wolfpack women’s volleyball coach Bryan Bunn on Tuesday and accepted N.C. State’s offer. The all-area libero will play two years as a preferred walk-on and two years on scholarship.
