  • Fairfield’s in the future for Schaumburg’s Akinola Oct 20, 2014 5:09 PM
    When Oyinkan Akinola made the trip to Connecticut to visit Fairfield University this past July, she was quite a distance from her home in the northwest suburbs. “But when I was there, it felt like home,” said the Schaumburg senior who is the leading attacker for the Saxons with her explosive arm swing. Fairfield will eventually become her home after she graduates from Schaumburg next May. The 5-foot-10 senior committed this summer to the Stags’ Division I volleyball program and coach Todd Kress, who has an overall record of 328-239 and was the second youngest coach in NCAA history with 200 career wins. Kress previously was the head coach at Buffalo and Florida State.

  • Girls volleyball: Hersey makes Pumpkin finale Oct 18, 2014 10:49 PM
    If Hersey’s girls volleyball team was looking for momentum heading into Thursday’s Mid-Suburban League championship match, the Huskies found it Saturday in Des Plaines. For the first time in years, they advanced to the title match of the 16-team Maine West Pumpkin Invite. Sandburg won the championship 25-18, 28-26 after Hersey defeated Lyons 25-23, 25-23 in the semifinals. The Huskies also netted a 25-18, 25-23 triumph over Riverside-Brookfield in the quarterfinals and defeated Lockport (25-22 20-25 25-21) and Conant (25-16, 25-8) in Friday’s pool play.

     
  • Fifth-place Pumpkin finish for Libertyville Oct 18, 2014 10:15 PM
    Libertyville’s girls volleyball team tuned up for Wednesday’s North Suburban Conference championship match against Wauconda by winning four of five matches in Maine West’s Pumpkin Tournament. Alex Basler had 30 kills and 7 blocks for the Wildcats, whose only loss was a 23-25, 25-19, 25-16 decision to Downers Grove South. Libertyville (27-5) settled for fifth place, posting wins over Belleville West (25-15, 25-23), Maine West (25-20, 25-13), Maine East (25-13, 25-15) and Evanston (25-23, 25-17).

  • Benet volleyball suffers first defeat Oct 18, 2014 7:08 PM
    While some schools may be intimidated stepping onto the volleyball court to take on Benet, Mother McAuley is not one of them. In the championship match of the Glenbard East Autumnfest tourney on Saturday, the Macs defeated the previously unbeaten Redwings 25-19, 25-20. The Macs (31-3), who knocked off Benet last year in the Class 4A finals, won their second straight Autumnfest crown behind the strong play of tourney MVP Kelsey Clark and outside hitter Ryann DeJarld, who had 15 kills in the finals on her way to all-tourney honors.

    Standing 5 feet, 5 inches tall, Harper College libero Meghan Chartier might be easy to overlook in a game where height is so important. But the the Buffalo Grove alum is still getting plenty of attention in NJCAA Division III women’s volleyball. She’s been named national player of the week, joining outside hitter Lauren Sokolowski (Rolling Meadows) in having earned that distinction.

    Warren’s girls volleyball team was all in for its “pink out” match. Jenna Walczak’s 7 kills, 3 blocks and 2 aces helped the Blue Devils defeat Deerfield 25-19, 25-19 in a nonconference match Thursday night. “Warren girls volleyball knows how to throw a party,” Warren coach Julie Filippo said. “The theme was ‘Fight’ and both teams played very well. Warren won the fight, but the real success was they raised $1,500 to donate to Making Strides of Lake County.”

  • Schaumburg completes run to MSL West title Oct 16, 2014 10:47 PM
    It was a special night for Schaumburg, which clinched the MSL West girls volleyball crown with a 25-20, 25-21 victory on parents night Thursday. Several alumni from the Schaumburg volleyball program were also part of the big crowd that watched the Saxons advance to the MSL title match for the first time since 2010. The Saxons (19-9, 9-1) finished one match ahead of Fremd (17-6, 8-2) in the MSL West.

    Hersey’s streak of 12 straight Mid-Suburban League East girls volleyball championships is quite the feat. The Huskies program added another rare accomplishment on Thursday. With its freshman and sophomore teams pulling out three-set wins at Rolling Meadows on Thursday, all levels combined for a 50-0 record this fall. The varsity squad completed its 10-0 run with a 25-12, 25-15 triumph as Liz Fuerst put down a match-high 12 kills.

    Senior Night. Last regular-season home game. It was an emotion-filled night for Cary-Grove senior libero Bree Coffey. But the senior, who will play in the Big Ten at Rutgers next season, didn’t let the emotions of the evening hinder her performance. With 15 digs and 2 aces, Coffey’s efforts help propel the Trojans to a 25-19, 25-15 over pesky Dundee-Crown in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division girls volleyball action in Cary Thursday night.

    Perhaps the Illinois High School Association knew exactly what it was doing when the decision came to shuffle a few girls volleyball sectional tournament alignments this season. Maybe the decision was just by chance — call it the luck of the draw. Whatever the case, the upcoming Class 4A Bartlett sectional field promises to be one of the most competitive in recent memory. I say it borders on almost being unfair.
