    Timing is everything when it comes to the playoffs. On Monday night Elgin High and South Elgin picked the ideal time to clean up their acts. Both limited their errors and survived to play another day with wins in the first round at the Class 4A Elk Grove girls volleyball regional. The Storm bounced back from an ugly regular-season finale loss to Larkin with a 25-13, 25-15 with over host Elk Grove while the Maroons snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 25-21, 25-15 win over Streamwood. South Elgin advances to play Maine East on Tuesday and Elgin will square off with Maine South.

  • St. Edward moves on; tough loss for Hampshire Oct 27, 2014 10:20 PM
    St. Edward girls volleyball coach Jaime Dovichi gave her team a game plan Monday night, and the Green Wave went out an executed it. Now they get to try to do the same thing against a No. 1 seed. The Green Wave roared back from a 22-19 deficit in Game 3 to upend Sycamore 25-19, 23-25, 25-19 in the first round of the Class 3A Hampshire regional, advancing to play No. 1 seed Kaneland (22-8) in a 5:30 p.m. semifinal on Tuesday. In Monday’s second game, No. 6 seed Hampshire gave No. 3 Genoa-Kingston all it could handle before the Cogs prevailed 23-25, 26-24, 25-18. G-K (26-9) takes on No. 2 Burlington Central (29-6) in Tuesday’s second semifinal.

    After No. 14 seeded Wheeling dropped the opening set to No. 19 Deerfield, Wildcats coach Jason Kopkowski had to send his team a message. “I just told them they’ve got to play the game they’ve fallen in love with and the game they’ve played all season,” he said. By the time the Wheeling Class 4A regional play-in match was over, the Wildcats fell in love with their strong outside Timber Terrell. The 5-foot-11 sophomore put down kills for 6 of the Wildcats' final 8 points in a 17-25, 25-16, 25-11 victory.

    Apparently one championship this week wasn’t enough for Hersey’s girls volleyball team. Just two days after winning the Mid-Suburban League title, the Huskies came back to win the championship of the Lake Park Invite in Roselle. The Huskies (30-5) defeated Oak Park-River Forest 25-14, 25-9 for their second title at Lake Park in three years.

    Carmel Catholic’s girls volleyball team made team history Thursday night. By defeating host St. Viator 25-14, 25-14, the Corsairs captured a share of the East Suburban Catholic Conference North Division championship with Nazareth. It’s the first ESCC title for Carmel, which improved to 29-5 overall, while finishing 6-2 in the division.

  • Girls volleyball: Crystal Lake South disposes of Crystal Lake Central Oct 23, 2014 10:13 PM
    Crystal Lake Central cruised to the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division championship with a perfect 12-0 slate. Crystal Lake South and Cary-Grove shared the Valley title with identical 9-1 marks. So, when South-Central met Thursday in a Fox Valley Conference crossover tilt, a close, hard-fought match was anticipated. The host Gators made sure that didn’t happen. In a snappy 40 minutes, South disposed of intra-city rival Central 25-19, 25-21.

  • Kaneland upends Yorkville to win confernece crown Oct 23, 2014 9:42 PM
    The long wait is finally over for the Kaneland volleyball team. The Knights traveled to Yorkville Thursday night and avenged their only Northern Illinois Big XII East loss of the season, their 26-24, 25-14 victory giving Kaneland a share of the conference championship with the Foxes (29-2, 7-1) — and spoiling their Senior Night in the process.

After splitting the first 2 games against visiting Elgin the Lions woke from their slumber and dominated game 3 to complete a 25-20, 20-25, 25-7 nonconference win on senior night.

    With the Hersey girls volleyball team 1 point away from a Mid-Suburban League championship, the Huskies’ Gabri Olhava gave her longtime friend Courtney Stedman the look. Seconds later, the big crowd at the Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights was looking at the 2014 MSL champs. Stedman quick set Olhava, who put down the kill that gave Hersey a 10th conference title with a 25-20, 25-16 victory over Mid-Suburban West champion Schaumburg.
