    Stevenson won the Prospect Power 8 Invite in girls tennis on Saturday, scoring 40 points to 26 for second-place Glenbrook North. Carmel finished fourth with 14 points and Lake Zurich finished seventh with 8.5 points. Kendall Kirsch of Stevenson won the No. 1 singles match over Marie Kapelevich of Carmel, 6-0, 6-0. Kaylin Dong and Zoe Taylor of Stevenson won the No. 1 doubles match.

    Rosary had dropped its fair share of close tennis matches this fall. But the Royals were on the opposite side Monday afternoon at Marmion High School in Aurora as Rosary escaped Kaneland on the tiebreaker (total games won) at 79-60 after the schools’ nonconference girls tennis dual ended in a 4-4 deadlock.

    As some of the best U.S. tennis players gathered in the Northwest suburbs this past weekend for Davis Cup matches at the Sears Centre, they didn’t forget an important constituency: youth players from the area. Team USA held a Davis Cup Fun Day at the South Barrington Club, where nearly 300 young players from tennis clubs throughout the suburbs met some of the best players in the country and had fun playing tennis.

    American John Isner won the final nine games and beat Slovakia’s Lukas Lacko 6-3, 6-0 Sunday on the final day of the Davis Cup World Group playoff at Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates. The U.S. had already won the first three matches to clinch the series, assuring a spot in the 2015 World Group.

  • Grayslake Central makes a winning state-ment Sep 13, 2014 10:17 PM
    Nikki Tatsuguchi was talking about her goals for the girls tennis season after winning the first singles title in the Grayslake Ram Knight Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Grayslake Central coach Chuck Lawson overheard the discussion and felt the need to interrupt. “State. State,” Lawson said forcefully from a few feet away to his junior. “Keep that at the forefront. She’s good enough to get there.” That’s also the goal for Tatsuguchi’s junior teammate Raquel Ruiz. She won the No. 2 singles title for the second straight year to help the Rams repeat as champions of the eight-team invite with 29 points.

     
  • Bryan brothers clinch Davis Cup playoff for U.S. Sep 13, 2014 4:17 PM
    Americans Bob and Mike Bryan routed Norbert Gombos and Lukas Lacko 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 Saturday in doubles to clinch the Davis Cup World Group playoff against Slovakia. The U.S. secured its spot in the 2015 World Group as the Bryans’ lopsided victory followed singles wins Friday night by John Isner and Sam Querrey at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates.

     
  • York, Libertyville tops at Buffalo Grove Sep 13, 2014 9:41 PM
    York’s girls tennis team topped seven teams competing at the Buffalo Grove Invite on an unusually cold September Saturday morning. The Dukes tallied 37 points to win the title with Libertyville and Maine South collecting 35 points.

    There is a major reason why Naperville Central's girls tennis team recorded one of its best finishes last season since capturing the state title in 1993. Her name is Tiffany Chen, and the defending state singles champion put her talents on display at Saturday's annual St. Charles East/Mary Carlson Invitational.

     
  • Davis Cup a big win for suburbs, mayor says Sep 11, 2014 7:13 PM
    When Hoffman Estates Mayor Bill McLeod selected the players for the opening match of the Davis Cup tournament that opens Friday at the Sears Centre Arena, he also signaled the return of the “World Cup of Tennis” to Illinois after an absence of more than 85 years. “It brings incredible excitement to the area and impacts the entire region," the mayor said.
