For all the problems facing Chicago's Taylor Townsend on Wednesday at the French Open, the 18-year-old American's first Grand Slam tournament, she always had her notebook to offer comfort and counsel. So along the way to beating 20th-seeded Alize Cornet of France 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to reach the third round, the 205th-ranked Townsend sat at changeovers and read what she'd written during practices.

  • Li Na loses in 1st round of French Open May 27, 2014 2:06 PM
Another day on the clay at the French Open, another reigning Australian Open champion bites the red dust. Li Na lost her first Grand Slam match since winning the title in Melbourne, falling to Kristina Mladenovic of France 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 on Tuesday. The loss came a day after men’s Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka was eliminated in the first round — the first time at any Grand Slam tournament that the men’s and women’s singles champions from the previous major lost in the first round.

The positive vibes and big-deal victories began for Stan Wawrinka at last year’s U.S. Open, back when he still went by “Stanislas.” They picked up steam at this year’s Australian Open, where he earned the right to forever be called “major champion.” And yet all of that seemed so far away late Monday at the French Open.

  • Drama aplenty through Day 1 of Stevenson sectional May 23, 2014 10:26 PM
It was a nearly perfect day for Stevenson tennis Friday afternoon, but the story of the day was the success of the Vernon Hills doubles team of David Dobrik/Nikita Lunkov. In dramatic fashion and on their home courts, the duo rode the wave of momentum right into next weekend’s state tournament. The sectional host Patriots easily advanced their two doubles teams plus sophomore Benjamin Bush in singles, while the Libertyville duo of Ben VanDixhorn and Stefano Tsorotiotis left little doubt as to their status at the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex. Junior Kevin Hunt of Carmel will make his first appearance at state after a hard-fought straight-set victory over Brian Weisberg of Stevenson, while Barrington’s No. 1 team of Ishaan Jaglin-Scott Apmann (9-5) will join Hunt for their maiden voyage to the big show.
