    Top-ranked Novak Djokovic won his fifth China Open title in dominating fashion Sunday, routing third-seeded Tomas Berdych 6-0, 6-2. Djokovic was one point away from handing Berdych a “double bagel” — a 6-0, 6-0 defeat — but the Czech player fought off match point, then broke Djokovic to win his first game and raise both arms in celebration.

  • Palatine’s Kawai impresses as Barrington clinches in MSL West Sep 30, 2014 10:19 PM
    With a week and a half left before all 12 teams compete in the Mid-Suburban League girls tennis tournament, Barrington (14-5) hosted Palatine (9-12) for a divisional faceoff on Tuesday. Barrington clinched yet another MSL West title by defeating the Pirates 6-1 in a matchup offering a potential preview of the conference championship matchup at No. 1 singles: Fillies junior Michelle Linden and Pirates freshman Asuka Kawai. In the aftermath of the match, Kawai’s teammates crowded the exit with their arms extended as she ran through a Palatine tunnel. Kawai (17-0) remained undefeated after notching a 7-5, 6-4 victory.

    St. Charles East’s girls tennis team may not feature any top-32 individual players this season but depth appears to be on its side. Thanks to a singles sweep from Olivia Gapuz, Kelsey Straumann and Haley Jeanes, the Saints (8-5, 4-1) scored a decisive 5-2 triumph over cross-town rival St. Charles North (5-5, 2-3) in their annual Upstate Eight Conference River Division dual match Tuesday afternoon at St. Charles East.

    Warren wins: Behind a couple of dominating singles performances, Warren won the championship of the Crystal Lake Central Invitational. Karyna Bihel of Warren defeated Ana Hatfield for the No. 1 singles title, 6-3, 6-0 while Alex Mella of Warren won the No. 2 singles match over Kayla Vittore of Belvidere North, 6-0, 6-0. Lake Zurich placed third overall, thanks in part to the No. 2 doubles team of Stephanie Johnsen and Emily Leahy. They won their match over Prairie Ridge, 6-1, 6-3. Carmel takes first: With 32 team points, Carmel won the Lakes Invite. Bri Minor of Carmel defeated Gaby Schoenberg of Grant 6-3, 6-1 to take the No. 1 singles title. Marie Kepelevich of Carmel defeated Nicole Tatsuguchi of Grayslake Central 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles match.

The Patriots punctuated their performance with triumphant cry as they were handed the plaque for first-place honors after amassing 74 points. Out of the seven slots, the Patriots sent six teams to the finals, and five of them emerged victorious.

Rolling Meadows: Sara Magnuson, Ana Karapetiana and Tyler Ann Valerio swept singles as the Huskies made it through their MSL East matchup against the visiting Mustangs without dropping a set in a 7-0 decison. Buffalo Grove d. Prospect: The visiting Bison won at Nos. 2 through 4 doubles to offset Prospect’s 2-1 edge at singles in a 4-3 victory. Prospect’s Natalie Lysik topped Anna Klipstein 6-0, 6-1 at first singles, and the Knights also got a singles win at No. 3. BG’s Dasha Ignatova topped Paige Bennett 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Barrington d. Hoffman Estates: The visiting Fillies rolled 7-0 in mostly 6-0, 6-0 decisions; Hita Patel and Priya Patel managed to win a game at No. 1 doubles against Anna Donoghue and Addie Hirsch for the Hawks. Conant d. Schaumburg: The host Cougars made it a clean sweep at doubles and took two of three singles matches in a 6-1 victory over the Saxons. Gaby Kaminski won 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1 singles for the Cougars, and Haley Anderson/Priya Gumta outlasted Schaumburg’s Maggie McClure/Ryan Shope 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles.
