  • St. Charles schools, Rosary looking strong heading into sectionals Nov 12, 2014 5:13 PM
Since mid-August, the focus for girls swim teams has been on training as athletes have piled up incredible numbers of yards in practice as well as numerous hours in the weight room. Saturday and for the next week, the focus shifts to the clock, where times and finishes are what matters. Swimming’s postseason starts with Saturday’s sectional meets and continues through the Nov. 21-22 state meet at Evanston.

  • Girls swimming: Fremd seniors focus on final achievement Nov 12, 2014 9:23 PM
It seems fitting that Fremd’s five standout senior swimmers will be remembered for the collective accomplishments. Grace Kneller, Erica King, Julia Portmann, Saki Takumiya and Loretta Stelnicki have individually reached the highest levels of the sport, but it’s their willingness to band together that truly sets them apart. They’ll coalesce as part of three Fremd relays in action at Saturday’s Stevenson sectional, with every reason to believe they’ll advance to the state meet at Evanston the following weekend with an opportunity to score big points in the team race.

  • Mundelein’s Falconer commits to Auburn Nov 11, 2014 9:11 PM
As Mundelein’s girls swimming and diving team prepares for Saturday’s Lake Forest sectional, its senior star has made her college choice official. One of the finest swimmers and water polo players to attend Palatine High School recently received his dues when he was inducted into the school’s athletic Hall of Fame. Dan Wimer was a Mid-Suburban League champion five times with four sectional championships. He was an eight-time state finalist and set multiple school records, capping his career by winning the 50-yard freestyle in the state finals his senior year.

  • Girls swimming: Jacobs-Hampshire claims FVC crown Nov 8, 2014 9:52 PM
When the Jacobs-Hampshire co-op girls swim team met for the first time in August, the main goal was to claim the Fox Valley Conference championship in early November. Mission accomplished. The Golden Eagles scored 229 points to claim the top prize in the FVC Saturday at Woodstock North.

  • O’Brien honored for powering Palatine diving Nov 3, 2014 11:58 AM
When coach Donna O’Brien arrived at Palatine High School in 1983, the Pirates’ swim team was not exactly known for its prolific divers. But once Donna O’Brien dove into things, a lot changed. O’Brien not only built the program from the ground up, she turned it into a powerhouse. She was recently honored for her accomplishments by being inducted in the Palatine Athletic Hall of Fame.

  • Rosary finishes second in conference meet Nov 2, 2014 7:50 PM
With spots still undecided for the team he will take to the IHSA Metea Valley Sectional, Rosary girls swim coach Bill Schalz needed every bit of data he could glean from Sunday’s Suburban Catholic Conference meet. The Beads gave a variety of information for their coaching staff to sift through, finishing a strong second to state power Loyola.

Here are high school girls swimming results from Saturday, Nov. 1.

  • Neuqua Valley third in its final UEC meet Nov 1, 2014 10:38 PM
Neuqua Valley’s girls swim team showed on Saturday, as it has all season, that it is one of the strongest teams in the area. But at Waubonsie Valley, meet-winning St. Charles North and second-place St. Charles East finished ahead of Jason Niforatos’ team in its final Upstate Eight Conference meet before heading to the DuPage Valley Conference in 2015.

  • St. Charles North wins UEC on final race Nov 1, 2014 10:25 PM
Describing Hannah Olsen’s swimming performances for St. Charles North as anything less than “electric” is to do a disservice both to electricity and Olsen.

  • Bartlett-Streamwood’s Filipek UEC 50, 100 champ Nov 1, 2014 9:48 PM
The 50-yard freestyle is the most unforgiving race in a swim meet. The race is often broken down as “a start, a flip turn and a finish.” But mess up on any of those three, or during the two lengths of the pool that comprise the race, and someone else wins. Bartlett-Streamwood’s Kayla Filipek was the best in the 50 freestyle at Saturday’s Upstate Eight Conference meet at Waubonsie Valley. The sophomore covered the distance in 24.24, six-tenths faster than second-placed Samantha Sauer from St. Charles North.

  • Girls swimming: Fremd finishes on top Nov 2, 2014 7:45 PM
Of the eight individual events contested in Saturday’s Mid-Suburban League girls swimming championships at Barrington, only one of them had a winner from Fremd. That was senior Saki Takumiya in the 100-yard butterfly. But this Fremd team is clearly more than the sum of its parts. The Vikings won the medley and 200 free relays, and no Fremd invidual entry finished lower than sixth place. That kind of consistency combined with a touch of misfortune for Barrington helped the Vikings claim the Mid-Suburban League title for a third straight year. Fremd finished with 305 points to Barrington’s 260.

  • Liva leaves MSL meet with a record effort Oct 31, 2014 10:06 PM
According to both Prospect senior diver Dana Liva and her coach, Antonino Bondi, Liva’s performance in Friday’s Mid-Suburban League championship meet was far from perfect. The judges, at the very least, sure liked it a lot. Liva completed a four-year run of MSL championships with a meet and pool record score of 492.45 at Barrington High School.

  • Girls swimming: Scouting MSL swimming and diving Oct 30, 2014 7:30 PM
Here's what to expect from the Mid-Suburban League girls swimming and diving meet. The action is at Barrington, starting with diving at 6 p.m. Friday and swimming at 11 a.m. Saturday.

  • Prospect’s Liva smoothly dives toward postseason success Oct 29, 2014 2:35 PM
There’s a certain smooth symmetry to the high school diving career of Dana Liva. Measured against the state’s best competitors, she’s enjoyed parabolic success in her time competing for Prospect. Her state meet finishes have been 12th as a freshman, sixth as a sophomore and fourth as a junior. Plotted against her Mid-Suburban League competitors, the achievement curve has been predictable in a different way: a perfectly straight line of consecutive first-place finishes. When Liva competes starting at 6 p.m. Friday at Barrington in the MSL meet, she’ll gracefully be pursuing conference diving championship No. 4.
