  • Chamber ensembles kick off EYSO season Sunday Nov 13, 2014 12:12 PM
    On Sunday, Nov. 16, the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra Chamber Music Institute with Director Jacqueline Fisher presents multiple chamber ensembles in their first concerts of the 2014-15 season. Four performances are scheduled, starting at 1, 2:30, 4 and 5:30 p.m. at the Elgin Community College Arts Center. All chamber concerts are free and open to the public.

     
  • CASA Kane County puts $25,000 grant to work for kids Nov 20, 2014 2:31 PM
    CASA Kane County, a local nonprofit organization that advocates for the best interests of abused and neglected children, was recently awarded a $25,000 grant from the UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS. The grant will be used to recruit, train, and supervise community volunteers who serve as the Court Appointed Special Advocate and Guardian ad Litem for children who have been abused or neglected in the Kane County juvenile court system.

     
  • Drop off Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes at Hosanna! Lutheran Nov 12, 2014 11:47 AM
    Hosanna! Lutheran Church in St. Charles once again will be a regional drop-off site this year for Operation Christmas Child. This ministry project of international Christian relief organization Samaritan’s Purse has collected and hand-delivered more than 100 million shoe box gifts to needy kids in over 130 countries since 1993.

South Elgin High School’s production, which runs Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 13-15, proves the point.

    The Elgin Elks 737 Lodge, in cooperation with the Illinois Elks Children’s Care Corporation and Sherman Hospital, will sponsor a free children’s orthopedic assessment clinic Monday, Nov. 17, for children who do not have private health insurance.

    Albright Theatre Company will hold auditions for “The Mousetrap” by Agatha Christie at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7 and Monday, Dec. 8. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Callbacks may be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, by invitation only.

    The Sisterhood of Congregation Kneseth Israel is hosting its annual Chanukah Bazaar. According to Tina Wolf, co-chairperson of the event, "We are starting off with a really big sale on opening day to move along some of our existing stock, and we will be introducing new items over the following three weekends." In addition to holiday items, the gift shop contains a wide variety of Judaica, and Jewish themed gifts.

    Members of Grace Lutheran Church of Lily Lake will host their annual Autumn Rummage Sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15. There will be many household items for everyone’s use, including many furniture items, seasonal decorations, Christmas lawn decorations, tools, workbench and riding lawn mower. Many items are $1.

    Ted Bowman of Elgin has been carving dala horses and dala rocking horses for decades. He will demonstrates his talent and sell his carvings with dozens of other artists at the fifth annual “Cottages in the Woods” Scandinavian Holiday Sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, and Sunday, Nov. 16, at Good Templar Park in Geneva.

     
  • Elgin Theatre Company presents “An Enchanting Night of Music” Nov 11, 2014 2:28 PM
    On Sunday, Nov. 16, pianist and composer Russell Stern and vocalist Linda Collins will perform "An Enchanting Night of Music," a fundraising event to support the Elgin Theatre Company, an Elgin cultural institution since 1952. Stern will perform selections from his recently released CD “Awakening” as well as selections from his first CD “Secrets of the Night.” Collins will perform classic blues, jazz, rock, and inspirational favorites, accompanied by Stern.

News: Jason Cropsey, RN, Intensive Care Unit Nurse, and Edward Hunter, Regional Mission Officer, were named 2014 Lifesaving Partners by Gift of Hope.

    Andrew Grams will be returning on Nov. 15-16 to conduct the Elgin Symphony Orchestra’s concert, "America's Musical Treasures." Joining Maestro Grams and the ESO onstage will be pianist William Wolfram. This ESO concert will feature music from some of our nation’s favorite composers, including Aaron Copland, Rodgers and Hammerstein and Leonard Bernstein.
