    One in three Americans is now a stepparent, a stepchild, a step sibling, or member of a blended family. That’s a big change from the ‘Leave it to Beaver’ days. The fact is; the traditional nuclear family (families where both parents are married and live together) is on the decline, from 45 percent of households in 1960 to 23 percent this year. Sept. 16 is National Step Family Day, which raises awareness for this growing demographic of families.

It's titled “Views from Brushwood Farm: The Photographs of Edward L. Ryerson & Edward Ranney, 1937-1974.”

  • First Human Case of West Nile Virus Reported in Lake County for 2014 Sep 10, 2014 10:23 AM
    The Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center reports that a 48-year-old male resident of Gurnee tested positive for West Nile virus. He was hospitalized and released. This is the county’s first West Nile virus human case in 2014. Last year, there were six confirmed human cases in Lake County.

    The featured artist for the month of October at Deerfield’s Patty Turner Center (PTC) is Frank J. Pirri. The Center’s Program Coordinator and PTC Art Wall Coordinator Jill Becker states, "manipulating light, shadow and color is a favorite challenge of our featured artist Frank Pirri. The long-time Deerfield resident credits his experience as a CEO and his entrepreneurial spirit as factors in his ability to look at things from all angles. The results are breathtaking landscape watercolors. The public is welcome to attend Pirri’s Opening at PTC, on Friday, October 10, from 5:30pm – 7:30pm.” Becker adds, “in addition to his artistic and entrepreneurial efforts, Frank is also an avid golfer as a member of the Men's Club at the Patty Turner Center.”

Trail Tales/Caminando con Cuentos, is a walking and reading experience featuring seven large illustrated panels with book exerpts. The program also is available at the Greenbelt Cultural Center.

    As 4-year-old Mia Gurevitz of Deerfield undergoes treatment for a brain tumor at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, Culver’s of Buffalo Grove will host a ‘Day of Giving” fundraiser, from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., on Monday, September 8, at its location at 450 McHenry Rd. The restaurant will donate 20 percent of its register receipts collected throughout the day to the Gurevitz family.
