    Marissa Gagliano is human after all. When Wheaton Academy's junior shortstop went 0-for-4 last Monday against Rosary, it marked the first time in her high school career she failed to reach base. Her streak had reached 56 straight games reaching base; Radford recruit Gagliano, hitting .545 on the season with a .591 on base percentage, 10 runs scored and 10 steals in six games this year, has hit safely in 48 of her 57 high school games.

"Believe it or not," Nussbaum smiled, "this used to be a quiet team." His Redhawks have plenty to talk about. No. 5 Naperville Central banged out 17 hits in winning the opener of a Saturday doubleheader with No. 15 Neuqua Valley 9-3, then batted around in a 6-run second inning to take the second game 6-4.

    Naperville Central slows Neuqua Valley Apr 11, 2013 12:00 AM
    Like a sprinter out of the starting blocks, the Neuqua Valley girls water polo team used its speed to its advantage at the start of Thursday’s match at Naperville Central. And the Wildcats went neck-and-neck with the Redhawks, ranked eighth in a state poll, and trailed just 5-4 after the first quarter. Naperville Central’s defense tightened up after that, however, and the Redhawks scored eight unanswered goals to win 13-4.

    Neuqua Valley baseball coach Robin Renner refers to Josh Piotrowski as "a second leadoff hitter at the 9-spot." Piotrowski, a junior outfielder, certainly lived up to the billing Monday afternoon as he enjoyed a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate and helped ignite a 4-run sixth inning to snap a 3-3 tie during the Wildcats' 7-5 Upstate Eight Conference victory over host Batavia (8-1, 3-1) ending the Bulldogs' 8-game winning streak.

    This wasn't your typical baseball game between Neuqua Valley and St. Charles North. That was perfectly fine with the Wildcats. Neuqua Valley made surprisingly quick work of its Upstate Eight Conference rival Friday in Naperville, stunning the North Stars with a 10-0 five-inning victory.

     
  • Bilgri’s debut a success for Neuqua Valley Apr 4, 2013 12:00 AM
    Megan Bilgri certainly made the most of her varsity debut Thursday. The Neuqua Valley junior struck out 15 and allowed just 2 hits as the Wildcats defeated host Elgin, 5-2, in Upstate Eight Conference softball action. "I was very pleased with how the (debut) turned out," Bilgri said. "I pitched a few games on JV, but varsity is definitely a step up."

    No fooling. Neuqua Valley High School's music program is again the best in the nation. The Grammy Foundation, which earlier this year honored Adele, Mumford and Sons and The Black Keys has named Neuqua Valley High School this year's National Grammy Signature School. The honor recognizes "top U.S. public high schools that are making an outstanding commitment to music education." Neuqua Valley was previously named the top school for music education in 2005.
