  • Former Maine West coach sues to get his job back Jul 11, 2014 7:13 PM
    A former Maine West soccer coach connected to a 2012 hazing scandal is suing Maine Township High School District 207 over his firing. Emilio Rodriguez has been formally dismissed by the school board twice, and his firing was upheld by an independent hearing officer. Now, he’s going to Cook County circuit court to appeal for his job.

    Maine Township High School District 207 is planning a $9.3 million, 23,000-square-foot addition to the existing gym at Maine West in Des Plaines that would include locker rooms, a weight room and wrestling room, but no field house. "The proposal here is to construct an expansion in such a way that if a (school) board at some future date wanted to add a field house, it could do so," spokesman Dave Beery said.

  • Maine West coach connected to hazing scandal formally fired Jun 4, 2014 5:06 AM
    A former Maine West soccer coach connected to a hazing scandal has been formally fired by the Maine Township High School District 207 board. The action comes almost a year and a half after the board voted to fire Emilio Rodriguez the first time — a decision that Rodriguez appealed, but was upheld by an independent hearing officer in April.

    St. Viator won its fourth regional title in the last five years on Saturday as the Lions knocked off Deerfield 3-1 in a regional final at Glenbrook North in Northbrook. “ I am really proud of this group,” St. Viator coach Mike Manno said. “As I said before, this team has bought into everything we have preached to them. They won again with timely hitting, great pitching and a will to win.” The Lions (23-14), who were seeded No. 5, will meet top seed Libertyville at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Glenbrook South.

     
  • Maine West Distinguished Alumnus named May 29, 2014 5:05 PM
    Elliot “Kip” Dodge, a noted scientist and artist, has been named 2014 Maine West Distinguished Alumnus. Dodge, who graduated in 1962, has worked as an aerospace designer, engineer and manager for Jet Propulsion Laboratory/National Aeronautics and Space Administration on Mars missions, and as a painter has shown his works both regionally and internationally. He lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

     
  • Barges, Elk Grove power past Elgin May 28, 2014 11:46 PM
    Brooke Barges belted 2 home runs and Aleece Duffy had one as Elk Grove powered its way into Saturday’s championship game of the St. Charles East regional championship with a 13-2 victory over Elgin in five innings. Hall of Fame coach Ken Grams’ Grenadiers, seeded No. 6, will face No. 3 St. Charles East at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

    The path to East Peoria for the 2014 IHSA state softball tourney begins today for six area teams who are competing in play-in games for Class 4A regionals. Regional semifinals take place on Tuesday and Wednesday with most championships on Saturday. One exception is the Cary-Grove regional where the title game is scheduled for Friday.

     
  • Elk Grove's Maher makes her mark with homer No. 11 May 24, 2014 8:38 PM
    Elk Grove shortstop Becca Maher finished the regular season on Saturday in record style. Maher led off the first game of a doubleheader against host Trinity by belting a home run. It was her 11th of the season, setting the school’s single season mark previously held by Dani Goranson and Megan Keegan. The Grens went on to top the Blazers 13-7 at the Triton College softball diamond. For good measure, Maher belted her 12th homer in Game 2 which the Grenadiers won 13-9 by scoring 4 runs in the top of the eighth inning to top the Blazers (20-12).

    When it comes to single-season hits, no one has done it better for Elk Grove’s softball team than Becca Maher. The senior shortstop went 3-for-4 with a double to reach 74 hits, breaking the school mark of 72 set by Jessica Balzano. Maher’s big day helped lead the Grens to an 8-1 victory at Wheeling.

    Defending Mid-Suburban East softball champion Buffalo Grove clinched at least a tie for another title on Wednesday with a 5-3 victory over visiting Elk Grove. The Bison (17-8, 11-3) won their tenth straight game as Julia Camardo (14-4) struck out seven, walked one and also won her tenth straight game.

     
  • Prospect reclaims share of East lead May 14, 2014 10:37 PM
    And just like that, the Mid-Suburban East baseball race is all tied up again. Prospect broke out of a second-place tie with Hersey by beating the Huskies 15-8 on Wednesday. That outcome, coupled with Rolling Meadows’ 3-1 victory at Elk Grove, leaves Prospect and Elk Grove tied for the East lead with 2 games left on the MSL slate.

     
  • Softball / Northwest roundup May 10, 2014 8:44 PM
    Sophomore Alex Masnica capped off Elk Grove’s trio of home runs in a big way Saturday afternoon. After Becca Maher and Brooke Barges had already cleared the fence earlier in the game with solo blasts, Masnica walloped a 2-run walk-off homer to left center with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Grens a 5-4 victory in Game 1 of a doubleheader with visiting Elk Grove. Gina Cirrincione doubled to set up Masnica’s blast which gave pitcher Mary Hirschauer the complete game win that included 6 strikeouts and 1 walk. The Grenadiers went on to sweep the twin bill with a 13-2 five-inning victory as freshman Taylor Leach fired a 4-hitter with 8 strikeouts and 1 walk. She also belted a triple.
