    There was no slowing Barrington at Jacobs on Tuesday, where the Broncos rolled past Johnsburg 62-39 to improve to 3-0 in the tournament. Barrington will meet Zion-Benton in Friday’s 6 p.m. game., with third-place and championship action on Saturday night.

    Barrington improved to 2-0 in Hinkle Holiday Classic play with a 52-42 victory over Cary-Grove on Monday. The Broncos (9-3 overall) were sharp from 3-point range, finishing with as many treys as 2-point goals. Chris Lester led the way with four 3s and finished with 16 points, while Rapolas Ivanauskas had three 3s and scored a game-high 21 points.

    Dan Hadler finished with a game-high 21 points to help Elk Grove improve to 2-1 in Mid-Suburban East boys basketball after a 54-50 victory over visiting Buffalo Grove on Friday. Buffalo Grove led by 1 point entering the fourth quarter before being outscored 16-11. Senior Depin Patel finished with 9 points, all on 3-pointers, for the Grenadiers. Collin Calcagno paced the Bison with 15 points and Colin Dekorski finished with 13.

    The best start for the Buffalo Grove’s girls basketball team in more than five years continued on Tuesday night when the Bison improved to 9-1 with a 63-46 nonconference win over visiting Cary-Grove. For the second straight night, senior Maddy Callahan had four 3-pointers and finished with 15 points. Junior guard Maddie Welter added three 3-pointers to lead all scorers with 17 points.

And one more thing. “She gave us some leadership that we have been lacking,” he added. If ever the Hall of Fame coach needed leadership, it’s this season. For the first time in his 34 seasons, he is playing three freshmen regularly on the floor.

    Maine West’s girls basketball team, which has won 26 conference championships in 34 years under coach Derril Kipp, got off to a 1-0 start in the Central Suburban North on Thursday night. The Warriors (2-5) kicked off league play with a 54-52 victory over Niles North in Skokie where Kipp got a combined 21 points of the bench from junior Jordan Hart and freshman Catherine Johnson (7 points), who also provided some key defensive play.

    Maine West basketball coach John Bongiorno’s Warriors had not played all that badly while starting the season 1-3 after the Thanksgiving tournament they hosted. “I stressed three things in the locker room before the game,” said Bongiorno. “Rebounding, turnovers, and getting a majority share in the 50-50 loose balls.” None of those three elements ended up favoring Maine West in a 50-35 loss to Glenbrook South in a Central Suburban crossover in Des Plaines on Tuesday night.

Allison Pearson and Jessica Riedl’s 13 points apiece helped lead the Warriors to their first win of the season on closing night of the Hoffman Estates girls basketball tournament. Hall of fame coach Derril Kipp watched his Warriors edge the host Hawks 53-52.

    Despite a barrage of hot second-half shooting, Maine West couldn’t contend with the imposing front line of Maine South on Saturday in the final game of the touranment hosted by the Warriors. Led by senior George Sargeant, who stands 6-feet-7 and weighs 220 pounds, Maine South defeated the Warriors 64-47 to take the tournament title with a perfect 4-0 record.

    Rolling Meadows sophomore Jared Murphy canned three 3s and finished with a game-high 30 points to help the Mustangs’ boys basketball team top Tilden 78-60 and improve to 2-1 after the completion of pool play at Palatine on Friday.

    Palatine improved to 2-0 by handling Richards 73-32 on Wednesday in the Ed Molitor Thanksgiving Classic hosted by the Pirates. R.J. Smith (12 points) and Mikey Williams (10 points) led a balanced effort for Palatine, which took control with a 23-point second quarter and led 40-16 by the half.

Making her debut as Leyden’s girls basketball coach on Tuesday night in Bensenville, Kuzmanic’s Eagles posted a 52-48 victory in overtime over host Fenton.
