    Naperville Central boys lacrosse coach Tim Hurst thought the Redhawks would be contenders in the B Class this spring. What he didn't expect was for his team to get off to such a fantastic start while knocking off Class A teams in the process. The Redhawks opened the season with a statement victory over Neuqua Valley, throttling the Class A Wildcats 12-5. They've followed it up with impressive wins over a handful of other Class A foes, including town rival Naperville North, as well as Benet and St. Charles North, a team that had the state's highest ranking earlier this spring.

    Seeing a Montini team with a 5-0 record isn't a surprise — certainly not in football. But this spring the Broncos are putting up an impressive record in lacrosse. The Broncos improved to 5-0 with a hard-fought 5-4 overtime win against Marmion on Friday.

  •  The Fegan sisters, from left, Lake Zurich girls lacrosse coach Katie Fegan, Molly Fegan Barber, Maureen Weldon and Maggie Fegan, have committed themselves to helping others through the American Heart Association after their father suffered a fatal heart attack and their mother survived a heart attack and quadruple bypass three years later. The sisters have planned a day of lacrosse April 27 in Lake Zurich between Lake Zurich and Fenwick high schools to raise money and awareness.

    After their father suffered a fatal heart attack in 2005 and their mother survived a heart attack and quadruple bypass in 2008, Katie Fegan and her sisters committed themselves to helping people through the American Heart Association. Now they're giving others the chance to join in. Lake Zurich High School will host a day of lacrosse games Saturday, April 27, between the Lake Zurich and Fenwick High School girls varsity, JV and freshman teams at the Lake Zurich High School stadium field, where teams for both schools will wear special uniforms in honor of the occasion. Admission proceeds and half of a split-the-pot raffle will go to the AHA. In addition, Fegan is soliciting local residents for the names of heart disease survivors or victims, who will be honored at the game.

    Lake Zurich is making it look easy. The Bears took a 2-0 record into last week's Spring Break Tune Up Tournament at Hoffman Estates. After cruising past Huntley 10-1 and hammering an undermanned Fremd squad, 15-1, the Bears had plenty of optimism at Hoffman Estates and it shined through. The Bears pounced on West Chicago 13-2 won a hard fought 5-2 game against Warren, and blitzed a relatively new Taft team 16-0 to advance to the championship game where they dominated Bartlett, 10-2.

    St. Charles North's Jud Huxtable was still trying to get his bearings straight early Saturday morning during the inaugural Battle of Burgess at Geneva. Huxtable came to life late in the North Stars first game in the three-game round robin tournament, scoring the game winner as the final seconds ticked off the clock to beat Naperville Central, 6-5. He would also add two goals in the tournament finale, to lead the North stars to a 7-2 victory over Geneva. Although a champion was not officially crowned, the North Stars won the tournament with a 3-0 record, as they also defeated crosstown rival, St. Charles East, 8-3.

  • Bus carrying Vt. lacrosse team crashes in NY Mar 12, 2013 12:00 AM
    A bus carrying college lacrosse players from Vermont was hit Tuesday by a sports car that spun out of control on a wet highway in upstate New York, sending the bus toppling onto its side, police said. One person in the sports car died. The victim was a 64-year-old female passenger in the red Porsche that hit the bus, authorities said; the 65-year-old man who had been driving was in critical condition. Four players on the bus were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

    The final piece of Rosemontís athletic complex, the Dome at the Ballpark, is open and abuzz with activity, officials said Friday. The seven-story dome, located just north of the intersection of Balmoral Avenue and Pearl, encloses a 140,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art indoor baseball and softball arena that officials boast is the largest in North America.

Officials from Northwestern Athletics and the Cubs announced Tuesday they have joined forces for a marketing partnership that will include showcasing Wildcat teams at Wrigley Field in coming years, including baseball, lacrosse and football.
