    Water levels on the Great Lakes are so low that shippers are being forced to leave as much as 15 percent of their cargo behind, said industry experts who are working to find ways to alleviate the problem. Lake Michigan and Lake Huron are about 26 inches below their long-term monthly averages, and Lake Superior is about 13 inches lower, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has said.

  • Feds: Ind. teacher had female students sext him Mar 28, 2013 12:00 AM
    A former teacher at a northwest Indiana high school has been charged with persuading several underage girls to send their naked photos to him by cellphone. Jon Erik Lilly of Cedar Lake was arrested Wednesday on federal charges of possessing visual depictions of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct. A probable cause and detention hearing is scheduled for Friday.

The longtime Republican operative says that Indiana's "ag-gag" bill would punish whistleblowers reporting animal cruelty. Groups representing Indiana farmers and manufacturers have been pushing a bill that would ban covert filming of their operations.

  • Man charged in shooting death of Indiana teen Mar 22, 2013 12:00 AM
    A 20-year-old South suburban accused of shooting through the window of Calumet City home has been charged in the death of a 15-year-old Indiana girl. Eric Anthony Brown of Calumet City was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Ashaya Miller and aggravated battery in the wounding of a 19-year-old man.

    A northern Indiana woman who was pulled off of a city bus and fatally shot along a busy street had recently obtained a protective order against her ex-boyfriend — the man police say killed her. Court documents show that Jacqueline Bouvier Hardy, 49, had filed for a protective order Tuesday against Kenneth Knight, but the Journal Gazette reported it did not appear Knight had been served with a copy.

    A northwestern Indiana teacher who wrote a threatening message on his classroom blackboard has been placed on administrative leave. The Lake Station School Board approved leave Wednesday for Edison High School business teacher Jeff Kincaid, who's taught business and coached for 28 years in Lake Station.
