Water levels on the Great Lakes are so low that shippers are being forced to leave as much as 15 percent of their cargo behind, said industry experts who are working to find ways to alleviate the problem. Lake Michigan and Lake Huron are about 26 inches below their long-term monthly averages, and Lake Superior is about 13 inches lower, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has said.

A federal judge on Friday permanently blocked Indiana from enforcing two key provisions of the state's immigration law approved by lawmakers two years ago, including one that she said could lead to "serious abuses" by police. The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana and the National Immigration Law Center had sued the state over the 2011 law.

A former teacher at a northwest Indiana high school has been charged with persuading several underage girls to send their naked photos to him by cellphone. Jon Erik Lilly of Cedar Lake was arrested Wednesday on federal charges of possessing visual depictions of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct. A probable cause and detention hearing is scheduled for Friday.

Groups representing Indiana farmers and manufacturers have been pushing a bill that would ban covert filming of their operations.

The state of Indiana completed the switch to taking the entire firearms licensing process online. Monday was the first day for all-digital firearms license applications. Indiana State Police spokesman Sgt. Ron Galaviz tells the South Bend Tribune the transition was a smooth one.

A 20-year-old South suburban accused of shooting through the window of Calumet City home has been charged in the death of a 15-year-old Indiana girl. Eric Anthony Brown of Calumet City was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Ashaya Miller and aggravated battery in the wounding of a 19-year-old man.

A northern Indiana woman who was pulled off of a city bus and fatally shot along a busy street had recently obtained a protective order against her ex-boyfriend — the man police say killed her. Court documents show that Jacqueline Bouvier Hardy, 49, had filed for a protective order Tuesday against Kenneth Knight, but the Journal Gazette reported it did not appear Knight had been served with a copy.
