  • St. Edward’s Scully advances to sectional Oct 8, 2014 9:33 PM
Ryann Scully will have a story to tell her kids and grandkids about one hole she played during the Class A Genoa-Kingston girls golf regional at The Oak Club Wednesday. What Scully can do, though, is tell a story in which she had an 18 — yes, an 18 — on a hole and still qualified for the sectional. “On the ninth hole I got into the sand by the green in two (shots),” Scully said, “and it was all downhill from there. It took me 12 shots to get out of that sand.”

  • Three more DI recruits keep Huntley girls soccer on rise Oct 8, 2014 10:09 PM
Most coaches feel fortunate if they have one Division I recruit on a team. Huntley girls soccer coach Kris Grabner has hit the trifecta. But then, that’s nothing new for Grabner and the Huntley girls’ program. On the steady rise the last several years, the Red Raiders had their furthest advancement in program history last spring when they reached the Elite Eight before losing in the Barrington supersectional to eventual Class 3A runner-up St. Charles East.

But the person whose opinion mattered most to Jacobs’ players certainly liked the Golden Eagles’ title chances. “Our goal was to win the regional,” Jacobs coach Gary Conrad said. “I just knew these guys had the ability to do it.”

The Red Raiders got the job done. Led by a 73 from Jake Grabner and a 75 from Trent Craig, Huntley placed first with a score of 312 at Thursday’s FVC meet hosted by McHenry and held at Oak Grove Golf Course.

  • Cary-Grove senior Luloff wins FVC crown Oct 1, 2014 7:12 PM
Cary-Grove senior Larissa Luloff admitted she put a lot of pressure on herself to win Wednesday’s Fox Valley Conference girls golf tournament at Crystal Woods. “I really wanted to win individually,” Luloff said. “I put that pressure on myself and I probably shouldn’t have.” But Luloff beat the pressure, and the golf course, to shoot a 5-over par 77 and come away with the individual title that also led her Crystal Lake co-op team to the FVC team championship.

  • Smith, Huntley leg out runner-up Bartlett finishes Sep 27, 2014 7:46 PM
Huntley senior Keagan Smith was glad he didn’t feel hamstrung in the final mile of Bartlett’s 13th Annual Flyin’ Hawk Cross Country Invitational. Smith’s powerful finishing surge helped him break up Lincoln-Way’s top two runners, Tommy Kolacki and Ian Peterson, and put him just 1.5 seconds behind Kolacki at the finish line Saturday morning at Sunrise Park. Smith finished the 3-mile race in 15:39.5. “Lately this season I still haven’t had something like that, and it felt good to have it again,” Smith said of his closing kick. “Usually around mile two my hamstrings go out, but today they never went out and I was feeling good.” Kolacki and Peterson were among four runners in the top seven as Lincoln-Way Central topped Huntley 33-61 for the team title. Fremd took third with 79.

  • Breakaway win for Van Vlierbergen in Bartlett Sep 27, 2014 7:00 PM
Jacobs senior Lauren Van Vlierbergen broke away from the pack early in Bartlett’s 13th annual Flyin’ Hawk Cross Country Invitational at Sunrise Park on Saturday morning. Schaumburg’s top five runners were packed in at the end of the 3-mile race. The methods led to familiar results as Van Vlierbergen took individual honors by more than 30 seconds for the second straight year. And Schaumburg continued its team dominance of the 14-team meet, with senior Caroline Kurdej leading its five scoring runners to finishes in the top 15 as it beat St. Charles North 47-78.

  • A Stampede of record efforts at Buffalo Grove Sep 27, 2014 4:53 PM
The records continue to fall at Buffalo Grove’s new swimming and diving facility. As the Bison hosted the first large invitational meet in their new digs, 12 teams gave their best mid-season efforts, with four impressive performances earning acclaim as the best yet in the eight-lane, all-deep water facility. Wheeling senior Theresa Godlewski left her mark with a pair of records, winning the 100-yard backstroke in 59.67 and the 50 free in 24.70. Hersey freshman Olivia Kusio won the 100 breaststroke in a record 1:09.06, also a season-best for her. And Prospect senior Dana Liva came up with a big effort in diving, winning the 11-dive event with 499.50 points.
