    As part of its 50th year-long celebration, the Hoffman Estates Park District Board of Commissioners designated Joseph L. Fabbrini as a “Park Pioneer” at its regular board meeting on Tuesday, March 25. The Park Pioneer award recognizes individuals and organizations who have made major contributions to the park district over the years.

    In the wake of Elgin and Hanover Park's withdrawal from the 2014 Northwest Fourth Fest at the Sears Centre Arena this July, the Hoffman Estates Park District is stepping up with a cosponsorship of $5,000 in cash and $2,000 in personnel time. Hoffman Estates Mayor Bill McLeod expressed gratefulness Wednesday for the recent decision by the park district board, saying the staffing help is especially welcome in the absence of Elgin and Hanover Park.

    Philosophical debate and a 5-2 vote Tuesday accompanied Hoffman Estates Park District commissioners' grudging approval of a one-year trial for video gambling in the restaurant of the Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club. Virtually all commissioners expressed some sort of personal concern with the allowance of gambling in a park district facility, but the majority believed no harm would be done to test it as a way of making the club more competitive in attracting weddings and other group events.

    A desire for more public input caused the Hoffman Estates Park District’s Recreation Committee Tuesday to delay for a month a recommendation on allowing video gambling in the bar of the Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club. By the time the committee next meets on March 11, staff members expect to have the results of a survey that will soon be emailed to members of the golf course.

    The Friends of Hoffman Estates Parks Foundation announces its second annual Girls Night Out event to raise money for its Endowment Fund. The endowment provides scholarships to low income families in Hoffman Estates who would otherwise be unable to afford, for instance, swimming lessons, youth sports, summer camp or preschool. In its first year in 2013, the event raised $2,500 for the fund.

    Mary Ellen Gabler of Arlington Heights didn't start figure skating until she was 41, but today she's a champion on the ice. She took first place in the Adult Silver division of the Chicago Open, and this December she will be a featured soloist at the Hoffman Estates Park District's winter ice show. “My original goal was to be able to skate backward,” Gabler says. “That fascinated me.”

  • St. Alexius discontinues Golden Circle program Aug 15, 2013 6:27 PM
    After 24 years of providing social and wellness services to people ages 50 and older, the St. Alexius Medical Center Golden Circle program has been discontinued. Jon Rozenfeld, chief operating officer of Alexian Brothers Acute Care Ministries, mailed a letter to Golden Circle members last week that said the decision came about “after careful consideration and a thorough evaluation of existing community senior resources available to the public.”

    Officials from the city of Elgin and DuPage Forest Preserve District say transparency grades recently made public by a watchdog group reflect outdated numbers. “We're being held accountable, but no one's holding them accountable,” said Sue Olafson, a forest district spokeswoman.
