    Renovated park opens Saturday in Hoffman Estates Oct 25, 2012 12:00 AM
    Hoffman Estates is opening a new park on Saturday. Tropicana Park was once home to a pool and clubhouse that opened in the 1960s. A neighborhood swim club approached the park district in 2007 when is could no longer maintain the facilities. With help from a state grant, the park has been transformed into a space all ages can enjoy, with bocce ball courts, a splash pad, horseshoe pit and more.

    Hoffman Estates Park District board commissioner Lollie Guiney recently won eight medals in the Senior Olympics for swimming and track and field events. The 82-year-old qualified for, and plans to attend, the Summer National Senior Games next year in Cleveland, Ohio. "I find it a challenge to try to improve and to see how I can make (the sports) work for me," she said.

    A new $133,000 Hoffman Estates dog park called Freedom Run is nearing completion. The 4-acre park will include a small dog area, water sources, shaded spots and five pieces of agility equimpment that a 15-year-old is building as part of an Eagle Scout service project. A grand opening for the park — which will serve primarily Hoffman Estates, Streamwood and Elgin residents — is scheduled for September 8, but a soft opening will occur sometime in August.

Ken Spurr is a jazz pianist, teacher and bandleader who has been active in the Chicago area for more than 10 years. This concert is the third of a series of eight summer shows.
