    Finishing third in the very competitive Blue Devil Invite on Saturday were the Lakes Eagles. They toppled Evanston 25-22, 25-22 to claim that high honor. “Yeah, in the bronze division,’’ said a sarcastic Katie Cheek, Lakes head coach. OK, so this is not your father’s Blue Devil Classic. Not only did local powers Vernon Hills and Buffalo Grove show up, but also the top ranked team in the state, Lincoln-Way East.

    Senior Faith Furio and junior Morgan Schulz gave Cary-Grove a powerful one-two punch in the girls track invitational at Buffalo Grove on Saturday. Furio took first in the long jump (17-0) and 100 dash (12.8) and also was part of the first-place 400 relay (51.0). Schulz won both the 100 high hurdles (15.0) and 300 low hurdles (45.9) The two then combined with sophomore Nicole Robins and junior Eva Burke in winning the 800 relay (1:47.3), leading Cary-Grove to a commanding first-place finish in the eight-team field with 209.75 points.

    The Stevenson boys gymnastics team showed that it’s an elite squad Friday night at the Bob Bohl Invitational in Mundelein. The Patriots rolled to the championship of the powerful 17-team field with a season-high 158.15 points as they toppled the host Mustangs, who delivered their season high of 152.95.

    Teams in the bottom half of the Mid-Suburban League girls soccer standings have given the top clubs plenty of trouble this week. After noticing Rolling Meadows had beaten Fremd, and Hoffman Estates nearly did likewise against Conant, it’s no wonder coach Pat Dudle had some concern when his No. 1-rated Bison welcomed divisional rival Prospect on Friday night at Grant Blaney Stadium. Something Dudle already knows, and it bears repeating: the MSL is one tough soccer conference. The visiting Knights (1-4-0) proved to be one tough group, taking the defending divisional champs to the brink until a remarkable game-winning strike from Skylar Groth in the 66th minute proved the difference in a 1-0 victory.

    Rolling Meadows and coach Mike Drenth have paid the price early this season for having such a young varsity roster. But Wednesday night, Drenth and his team cashed in for a big win. Mary Collins’ header at 30 minutes held up the rest of the way for the Mustangs (1-4-0, 1-1-0), who got their first victory of the season by topping visiting Fremd 1-0.

    The birthday bash continued for Hoffman Estates softball team on Monday. For the third time this season, a Hawks player celebrated a birthday and her team won the game. This time, on the day she turned 16, sophomore Veronica Cardella had an RBI single in the third inning of Hoffman’s 11-4 win over visiting Maine South.

    The Mid-Suburban West ruled at the Barrington softball quad on Saturday. Host Barrington and fellow conference mate Schaumburg each won their games over McHenry and Lane Tech. The Fillies topped McHenry 7-2 in their first game as junior Keenan Dolezal (5-2) earned the win for the Fillies (5-2) with 5 strikeouts.

    A 19-year-old Buffalo Grove High School graduate lost his battle with cancer this week, but while Andrew Zint lived he inspired and touched a lot of people. “Students became very compassionate for what Andrew was going through and really rallied behind him,” says Robert Hartwig, associate principal. “He had a great sense of humor and attitude, and students really admired him.”

    No matter what the climate holds, these Wildcats just keep roaring. After fashioning a 5-0 record in the 80-degree Florida weather 10 days ago, Libertyville’s softball team was equally impressive with temperatures in the low 40s on Friday. Playing their first game this season in Illinois, the Wildcats surged past visiting Buffalo Grove 14-3 in five innings.
