    The path to East Peoria for the 2014 IHSA state softball tourney begins today for six area teams who are competing in play-in games for Class 4A regionals. Regional semifinals take place on Tuesday and Wednesday with most championships on Saturday. One exception is the Cary-Grove regional where the title game is scheduled for Friday.

    Ben VanDixhorn made his statement to the boys tennis state tournament committee for a highly sought-after 3-4 seed with a three-set victory over teammate Stefano Tsorotiotis to capture the singles crown in Saturday’s Stevenson sectional, held at the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex. Stevenson won the team trophy, finishing ahead of Libertyville 21-14n Next were Mid-Suburban League champion Barrington (10), with Vernon Hills rounding out the top four with 7 points.

    It took two overtimes but Conant’s girls soccer team, seeded No. 2 in its own Class 3A sectional, survived Wheaton North 4-2 on Friday to claim the championship of the Rolling Meadows regional. Bianca Madonia, Zoe Shoro, Drew Wentzel and Leah Celarek netted the goals for coach Jason Franco’s Cougars.

    Conant’s softball players have hit an area-high 45 home runs runs this season. They may not have put any over the fence in Thursday’s 41st edition of Mid-Suburban League championship game but the Cougars showed their versatility.They used a few extra base hits, a few singles, steady defense and solid pitching to claim their third MSL crown in four years with a 3-0 shutout over visiting Buffalo Grove.

    For the past three years, the Conant and Buffalo Grove softball teams played in the Mid-Suburban League championship game. But not against each other. The Cougars defeated Elk Grove in the 2011 and 2012 editions while the Bison lost to Barrington in last year’s renewal. But they did meet once this season. And if their meeting in Thursday's 41st MSL title match in Hoffman Estates is anything similar, it promises to be quite an exciting match. The Bison won on their home field 10-9 on May 2.

    For weeks, Barrington has been building toward the Mid-Suburban League tournament, knowing its talent and depth might be the difference in the final tally. And Saturday afternoon, the Broncos were a ferocious bunch at doubles and used command performances from Zach Hennenfent and Mohammed Walji at Nos. 2 and 3 singles to run away from the field for a second consecutive league title at Schaumburg. The Broncos outscored Buffalo Grove 57-45 to win it, with Fremd (34), MSL East champ Prospect (31) and Rolling Meadows (30) rounding out the first five in the touranment standings.

    Heading into the final race of the night, senior John Andraschko knew he had just one job to do. And it was a big one: Anchor the Broncos’ 1,600-meter relay relay to a win. That was the position the Broncos were in as two-time defending Mid Suburban League boys track champion Fremd held a 114-109.5 lead before the final race started. “We just had to focus on what we could control,” Andraschko said. “Our focus was on ourselves and about going out to try and win the race.” Andraschko anchored the group that included Brendan Melynchuk, Curtis Monahan, and Adam Phillips to a win in 3:28.07. The Broncos then got help from second-place Hersey (3:28.84) and third-place Palatine (3:29.56), all of which added up to a Barrington victory in the MSL meet. By one-half point. Barrington won its first conference title since 2007 with 119.5 points. The two-time defending champion Vikings were second with 119 points followed by Schaumburg (96.5), Palatine (73) and Hersey (71).

    Mid-Suburban League badminton champion Buffalo Grove is holding up well against the rest of the state. After the first day of the state tournament in Charleston, the Bison have 10 points, giving them a half-point lead over Thornton Fractional South. Hinsdale Central is third at 9, and Prospect is tied with three teams for fourth place at 7.5 points.

    Defending Mid-Suburban East softball champion Buffalo Grove clinched at least a tie for another title on Wednesday with a 5-3 victory over visiting Elk Grove. The Bison (17-8, 11-3) won their tenth straight game as Julia Camardo (14-4) struck out seven, walked one and also won her tenth straight game.

    Barrington closed in style on Friday at the Mid-Suburban League girls track meet. The Fillies capped things by taking first in the meet-ending 1,600-meter relay and to nail down their sixth MSL title with 140 points at Wheeling. Palatine finished second with 137.5 points, just ahead of defending champion Prospect (136).

    Last year as a sophomore, Katelynn Sommers went to the state badminton tournament in Charleston as a spectator. She was there to support her Buffalo Grove teammates, including Julie Jambrone, who wound up taking home a doubles medal by finishing sixth. This season Sommers will be going back to the state meet — not only as a participant, but also as a sectional tourney champion. The junior and her doubles partner, Jambrone, won the Bison sectional tourney Friday on their home court by defeating another BG team, Mady Berns and Madison Fortman, in straight sets.

    Darren Llewellyn says soccer can be crazy and cruel — which is one reason he enjoys the sport so much. It was cruel Friday night, to be sure. But not for Llewellyn’s Hersey team. Hersey and visiting Buffalo Grove battled to a scoreless draw, and that outcome clinched a Huskies appearance in Wednesday’s Mid-Suburban League Soccer Bowl at Barrington. The Huskies (16-4-1, 10-0-1) earned their second trip to the league championship matchup in the last three years with 31 points, 3 points clear of the Bison (19-1-2, 9-0-2, 28).

    It just made sense for both sides to get Brian McBride in Chicago Fire practice gear again. McBride, a native of Arlington Heights and a Buffalo Grove High School grad, is working as a part-time assistant to help the Fire with its offensive attack.
