  • Barton, BG bounce Meadows May 11, 2013 12:00 AM
    Last month, Rolling Meadows senior pitcher Sara Brunlieb received a birthday present of four tickets for Brad Paisley's country music concert on Saturday night in Tinley Park. Brunlieb was nice enough to invite good friend Erin Barton as one of her guests. Earlier in the day, Barton's bat wasn't as nice to Brunlieb. Barton, Buffalo Grove's senior third baseman, lined a two-out double to right center for the game-winning RBI as the Bison blanked the visiting Mustangs 2-0 in the Mid-Suburban East contest.

     
  • Trophy time, again, for Fremd May 11, 2013 12:00 AM
    It turned out to be another finish to remember for Fremd's badminton team. Junior Angela Wu and senior Kelly Owens advanced through the singles consolation bracket in Saturday in Charleston to meet one another in the consolation semifs. Wu won that matchup 21-14, 21-9 to earn a spot in the fifth-place match, where she dropped a two-setter to Audrey Mang of New Trier. The points amassed by Wu and Owens helped the Vikings to another state trophy finish under coach Bob Hanson. Thornton Fractional South won the team championship with 16.5 points. Fremd and Naperville Central tied for second place with 12.

    Barrington’s back on top in MSL May 11, 2013 12:00 AM
    It seemed like an eternity for John Roncone, but his tennis team from Barrington is back on top for the first time since 2010. The Broncos lifted the Mid-Suburban League championship trophy on a cold, windy Saturday afternoon at host Wheeling thanks to supremacy at doubles and steady work at singles, particularly from No. 3 champ Zach Hennenfent. Barrington outscored Fremd by 14 points, 61-47. Prospect took third with 34.

     
  • Palatine puts it in gear — keeps it there May 10, 2013 12:00 AM
    Palatine was strong from start to finish. The Pirates made a statement with a victory in the opening 3,200 relay (9:22.65) and closed the meet with a bang, taking first in the 1,600 relay (4:04.26). In between, host Palatine made the most of its opportunities in cruising to the sectional title with 116.5 points.Barrington took second with 74 points, followed by Warren (66 points), Wheeling (46 points), and Lake Forest (42 points).

    Fremd’s talent rises to the top May 10, 2013 12:00 AM
    The Fremd boys track and field team has a group of talented athletes from top to bottom. In Friday's Mid-Suburban League championship meet at Hoffman Estates, the Vikings showed just how deep a group they are. Despite finishing first in only two events, Fremd was still able to win the MSL title by edging Barrington, who finished second, by a score of 105-93.

     
  • Big rally lifts Schaumburg May 10, 2013 12:00 AM
    Trailing 8-2 after five innings, Schaumburg's softball team scored 9 runs in the top of the sixth to pull out an 11-8 victory over visiting Conant in the Mid-Suburban League game. Senior Hannah Kerr (6-2) earned the win for the Saxons, who improved to 16-8 and 8-7.

     
  • Ward does it all for Hoffman Estates May 10, 2013 12:00 AM
    Hoffman Estates' Jimmy Ward threw a shutout and had a grand slam to help the Hawks win their fourth straight, 4-0 over Wheeling, in Mid-Suburban League baseball Friday.

    Joey Mauk and Conant accomplished what they came for Friday at the 61st annual boys gymnastics state finals at Lincoln-Way East in Frankfort. Conant avoided some early trouble to claim a second-place trophy, scoring a 155.70 to finish behind Wheaton co-op's 161.65. Mauk put together his best all-around performance of the year to finish third with a career-best 54.70.

     
  • Wu, Fremd chasing titles May 10, 2013 12:00 AM
    Fremd junior Angela Wu is in prime position for a run at the badminton singles championship, and the Vikings are also in the thick of the team state championship hunt after day one of the state tournament Friday in Charleston. Wu, a two-time Mid-Suburban League champion, rolled past all of her first three opponents in two games to earn a spot in Saturday's quarterfinals against Emma Adcock of Hinsdale South. Fremd was in second place in the team standings with 9.5 points, trailing Thornton Fractional South by 1.5 points and ahead of third-place Downers Grove North and Naperville Central by a half point.

     
  • Heady effort from Hedstrom, Palatine May 9, 2013 12:00 AM
    North Dakota recruit Megan Hedstrom says the motto of her Palatine softball team is simple. "We play as a team," said the Pirates' ace. "And we win as a team." And it's a team that knows how to come from behind. A few weeks earlier the Pirates rallied from a 6-0 deficit to edge Schaumburg 8-6. Playing on the field of Mid-Suburban East leader Buffalo Grove on Thursday, the Pirates found themselves in a 4-1 hole after four innings. But the visitors broke through for 4 runs in the top of the sixth and Hedstrom added another with her home run in the top of the seventh as the Pirates captured a 6-4 triumph.

  • Barton, BG seniors enjoy big day May 8, 2013 12:00 AM
    It was Senior Day for Buffalo Grove's softball team on Wednesday. Senior third baseman Erin Barton couldn't have begun the celebration of her own day any better. Barton belted a 3-run homer in the first inning and that proved plenty for sophomore ace Julia Camardo, who went on to shut out visiting Wheeling 5-0. Camardo (11-6) tossed a 1-hitter for the Bison (12-7) who improved to 8-4 in the Mid-Suburban East, two games in front of Elk Grove (7-7).

    Pfeiffer stars as Barrington repeats in MSL May 8, 2013 12:00 AM
    Under the bright lights at center stage, Molly Pfeiffer helped Barrington steal the show Wednesday night in the 24th annual MSL Soccer Cup. The Fillies senior had a hand in both goals while turning in a commanding 80-minute effort to lift Barrington to an impressive 2-0 victory over Buffalo Grove. It's the Fillies' second consecutive conference title and third in four seasons.

     
  • Wazorick pitches in as Meadows rolls May 8, 2013 12:00 AM
    For the third consecutive game, Rolling Meadows received outstanding pitching as the Mustangs rolled past host Buffalo Grove 10-0 in 5 innings Wednesday. It was Mickey Wazorick's turn to be dominant, allowing just 3 hits while fanning four and walking none. Wazorick's performance comes on the heels of Jack Milas' no-hitter on Tuesday and Matt Dennis' 16-strikeout performance on Monday. The strong pitching gave Rolling Meadows (14-8, 11-1) its sixth win in a row. The Mustangs continue to lead Elk Grove by 2 games with just 4 to play in the MSL East.

     
  • Roman, Prospect surprise Buffalo Grove May 8, 2013 12:00 AM
    Freshman Angela Roman collected more than half of visiting Prospect's RBI when the Knights stunned Mid-Suburban East softball leader Buffalo Grove 9-4 on Tuesday. Roman, who went 2-for-4 with 5 RBI, belted a two-out 3-run homer in the fifth inning to give the Knights a 9-1 lead. It was Roman's second homer of the season. She also hit one against Fremd last Saturday.

  • Peterson to lead Buffalo Grove boys basketball May 6, 2013 12:00 AM
    Keith Peterson is in as Buffalo Grove's boys basketball coach. The longtime Bison assistant is hoping his familiarity with the players and program makes for an easy transition to his first head-coaching gig. "It's huge," he said. "We had our first meeting last week, and everybody knew what to expect from me, and vice versa." Peterson has had a role in the BG program for the last 11 years, including eight as a freshman coach and three as a varsity assistant to Ryan O'Connor, who stepped away earlier this spring.

    Mundelein, Buffalo Grove embrace the spotlightMay 4, 2013 12:00 AM
    The Mundelein boys gymnastics team did not want to miss out on being a part of history Saturday afternoon at their own nine-team sectional meet. The Mustangs put together an outstanding all-around team performance with a season-high 152.75 points to become the 20th team in school history to earn a berth to the Elite Eight meet next Friday at Lincoln-Way East. Runner-up Buffalo Grove also did not mind the bright lights of the sectional meet as the Bison really shined with a second-place score of 150.7 to qualify for the Elite Eight meet for the first time since 1980.

    Santiago, Prospect connect for repeat MSL title May 3, 2013 12:00 AM
    If Prospect was looking for a knockout punch, junior Christina Santiago sure delivered it. Santiago came from behind in the third lap to take control of a loaded 1,600-meter field, cruising to the win in 5:10.30 and helping nail down a second consecutive Mid-Suburban League title for the Knights on Friday night at Schaumburg. Prospect won five events in winning with 153 points, Palatine took second (129 points) followed by Barrington (106 points), Wheeling (54 points), and Fremd ( 52 points).

     
  • Rolling Meadows maintains East edge May 2, 2013 12:00 AM
    Rolling Meadows earned a 25-18, 25-21 victory over Elk Grove on Thursday to improve 7-2 in the Mid-Suburban East and maintain a half-game lead over Prospect for the divisional lead.
