Nicole Pauly, one of the top players in Palatine High School softball history, is the new head coach of the Pirates program, school officials announced Monday. A former professional softball player, Pauly served as an assistant at PHS this spring under head coach Jeff Manz. She also completed her first year at Palatine as a counselor. “Nicole is a standout athlete, and has been a great addition to our student services team,” said Palatine High School Principal Gary Steiger. “Athletically, she has left her mark on every program she’s been associated with, from her playing days at PHS, Northwestern, and professionally to her previous coaching experience. As a four-year starter at Northwestern, Pauly had 53 home runs, 168 RBI, 149 runs scored and a .604 slugging percentage in 215 collegiate games. • Schroeder, Lake Zurich battle past Buffalo Grove May 31, 2014 5:19 PM
If Maria Schroeder’s soft liner had been hit 3 feet to the left, the Lake Zurich senior third baseman would have had her single. Alas, it was caught. So Schroeder had to settle for three-quarters of a cycle in this regional title battle with Buffalo Grove on Saturday morning. She led off the Lake Zurich first with a long double. She batted again in the second inning and slammed a triple to right center. And in her last at-bat of the day at Glenbrook South, she came to plate with runners on second and third. The Bison elected to pitch to her even with first base open. And Schroeder made BG pay when she smoked a liner over the left field wall. It was good for a 3-run homer. Schroeder’s hitting heroics backed up Olivia Schneider’s 3-hit pitching as Lake Zurich (26-4) stopped Buffalo Grove 4-0.

  • Barrington edges BG for sixth straight sectional crown May 30, 2014 11:20 PM
Nearly two months of waiting saw the two giants of Mid-Suburban League girls soccer meet on Friday night in the championship match of the Class 3A Libertyville sectional final: No. 1 seed Buffalo Grove vs. No. 2. Barrington. There could be no doubt that this was who everyone figured would be in this much-anticipated contest. Colleen Zickert finally broke the resistance Barrington’s defense to bring the Bison (22-3-3) close at 44 minutes but the Fillies’ Jenna Szczesny had already put the shine of the silverware with two first-half strikes to give Barrington a hard-fought 2-1 victory. It was the sixth straight sectional crown for the Fillies (18-3-1), who will meet New Trier at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Hersey supersectional with a chance to return to the final four of the state tournament.

  • Buffalo Grove tandem bows out of state tourney May 30, 2014 10:32 PM
There can be no doubting that Buffalo Grove’s doubles team of Peter Georgiades and Anton Levitin played beyond its wildest expectations during the first day of the state tournament. Georgiades and Levitin went all the way though to the round of 16 on their home court, but their hopes were dashed Friday in Palatine by Edwardsville in two long sets. After falling in their quarterfinal to 5-8 seed David Zakhodin/Miguel Perez of Glenbrook North at Buffalo Grove, the Bison (30-6) were eliminated with a 7-5, 7-6 (5) loss to the Tigers.

  • Buffalo Grove duo makes the grade May 29, 2014 10:39 PM
After match point, you had to know something good had just happened when Peter Georgiades practically broke the 100-meter record with his mad dash into the building at Buffalo Grove. The Bison senior couldn’t wait to get inside to tell a teacher that both he and doubles partner Anton Levitin had just stunned favored Thomas Hanley/Wyatt Mayer of New Trier in three sets to earn a spot in today’s round of 16. It’s the first time a player or team from BG has advanced that deeply in the boys tennis state tournament since 2008.
