  • Smith, Stevenson get to work against Zion-Benton Feb 7, 2015 11:18 PM
Just as the Zion-Benton defense did with him, Stevenson sophomore Justin Smith had his hands full on Saturday night. He lugged out a large green and gold ball bag as he exited the Patriots’ locker room. It’s called paying your dues, or what the youngest guy on the varsity has to do. “Yeah, I’ve got to bring the balls out, put them away, gather everything up in the locker room,” Smith said. “I’ve got to put things away at practice.” Smith also put away a thunderous alley-oop dunk. It was part of his 15-point outing that helped Stevenson earn an 87-64 victory over host Zion-Benton. The Patriots, ranked No. 1 in Class 4A, remain unbeaten in the state of Illinois. Overall, they are 19-2 and 8-0 in the North Suburban Conference Lake Division.

  • Steinhaus, persistent Libertyville top Zion-Benton Jan 16, 2015 11:02 PM
After a long 3-point attempt front-rimmed for Libertyville junior Paul Steinhaus, he took both hands and banged them right to his forehead in frustration. Another long 3 rimmed out, and his arms went right in the air as he wondered why the iron was so unkind. So when he had a third attempt at a 3-pointer with the Wildcats trailing host Zion-Benton in a North Suburban Conference Lake Division contest Friday night, Steinhaus didn’t hesitate. The long ball from the right side of the arch was perfect, and the only arms in the air were his teammates’. The long 3 gave Libertyville the lead, and a running layup by Steinhaus with 1:56 left secured a big 62-59 win, the Wildcats’ third straight.

  • Take-charge effort lifts Stevenson past Zion-Benton Jan 9, 2015 11:00 PM
You won’t see Stevenson senior Parker Nichols at the top of the scoring list for the top-ranked Patriots, and he is just fine with that. Where you will typically find Nichols is under the basket, and even sometimes flat on his back on the defensive end. Of course, he does it for the betterment of the Patriots defense, but he has a hidden agenda as well. “Coach (Ambrose) said if I draw two charges in a game I get pizza,” Nichols said. So what does Nichols get after drawing 5 charges in an 81-56 win over Zion-Benton in a North Suburban Conference Lake division game at home Friday night? “I don’t know,” Nichols said with a smile. “We might have to talk about that one.”

A lack of hustle? A lack of energy? That doesn’t sound like Mundelein girls basketball. Yet that had been the complaint during a two-game losing streak that hit the Mustangs. Evidently, someone lit a fire under the Mustangs before Friday night’s North Suburban Lake Division game against visiting Zion-Benton. Mundelein senior guard Marie DeVito hit four 3-pointers. She and teammate Amy Richards combined for 30 points. Mundelein (5-3, 1-2) registered its first division win, as the Mustangs led start to finish in capturing a 53-44 decision.

Ricky Sidlowski went right in and scored off the opening tip for the Bulldogs. On their next possession, Matt Bulgarelli drove right at 6-5 Tennessee recruit Admiral Schofield for a drive that rimmed off. Cole Steger made his return at quarterback for Round Lake, albeit briefly, returning from a back injury. And Chris Perry gave the Panthers a nice spark early in the second half. But Bongratz and his teammates are well-versed on that history. It’s what motivates them to go a little harder in the state tournament, as they did Tuesday night at the Antioch regional. The top-seeded Blue Devils had little trouble knocking off a scrappy Waukegan team in the semifinals, 25-12, 25-15. Warren will now face No. 2 Zion-Benton in today’s regional championship game (6 p.m.) at Antioch.
