  • Concerted effort makes the difference for Mundelein Dec 12, 2014 11:43 PM
A lack of hustle? A lack of energy? That doesn’t sound like Mundelein girls basketball. Yet that had been the complaint during a two-game losing streak that hit the Mustangs. Evidently, someone lit a fire under the Mustangs before Friday night’s North Suburban Lake Division game against visiting Zion-Benton. Mundelein senior guard Marie DeVito hit four 3-pointers. She and teammate Amy Richards combined for 30 points. Mundelein (5-3, 1-2) registered its first division win, as the Mustangs led start to finish in capturing a 53-44 decision.

  • Zion-Benton turns back determined Wauconda Nov 29, 2014 11:17 PM
Wauconda exhibited no hesitation or trepidation right from the start of Saturday night’s championship game of the Richmond-Burton/Johnsburg Boys Basketball Tournament against Lake County power Zion-Benton. Ricky Sidlowski went right in and scored off the opening tip for the Bulldogs. On their next possession, Matt Bulgarelli drove right at 6-5 Tennessee recruit Admiral Schofield for a drive that rimmed off. And early in the fourth quarter the outcome was still in doubt when Wauconda junior point guard Bryan Nee nailed his fourth 3-pointer. But a sudden long-range outburst saw the Zee-Bees finally pull away to claim the title with a 66-49 victory as Schofield had game-highs of 24 points and 12 rebounds at Johnsburg.

  • Iwema, Warren pick off Zion-Benton Oct 25, 2014 12:29 AM
Warren linebacker Cole Iwema and defensive end Bryan Nolan each finished the regular season in fine fashion, as they led the Blue Devils to a 42-0 shutout of host Zion-Benton Friday night. Warren finished the regular season with 7-2 record and 5-2 in the North Suburban Lake Division.

  • Libertyville takes offense in bounce-back win Oct 2, 2014 10:58 PM
After being held to 20 points in a loss to Lake Forest last week, host Libertyville really wanted to get the job done offensively Friday night against Zion-Benton. And with 254 yards of offense in the first half alone, the Wildcats did exactly that as they rolled to a 48-21 North Suburban Conference victory over the Zee-Bees in this Lake Division football game.

  • Lake Zurich impresses at Zion-Benton Sep 27, 2014 12:27 AM
Lake Zurich football coach Dave Proffitt know why his football team is a consistent winner. “I think it’s attitude,” said Proffitt. “Our coaching staff is all on the same page.” So were Lake Zurich’s players Friday night. The Bears traveled to Zion and crushed an improved Zion-Benton squad 40-6 in a North Suburban Lake Division game.

  • Second-half surge lifts Zion-Benton past Round Lake Sep 19, 2014 11:44 PM
Cole Steger made his return at quarterback for Round Lake, albeit briefly, returning from a back injury. And Chris Perry gave the Panthers a nice spark early in the second half. But that wasn’t nearly enough for a Round Lake victory, as visiting Zion-Benton scored 35 unanswered points in the second half and rolled past the Panthers 56-7 in a North Suburban crossover on Friday night.

  • Zion-Benton denies Mundelein Sep 13, 2014 12:42 AM
Mundelein’s football team looked like it was going to win its first game of the season. It didn’t end well for the host Mustangs, however. Zion-Benton scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to win 20-14 in a North Suburban Lake Division opener Friday night.

  • Boys golf / Lake County roundup Sep 9, 2014 11:05 PM
Boys golf Wauconda wins twice: Zach Lahrman fired a 39 to lead Wauconda’s boys golf team to a pair of wins at Countryside Golf Club on Tuesday. Wauconda carded a 171 to edge Zion-Benton (175) and Lakes (180), which had the medalist in Mike Barry, who shot a 1-over-par 37. Wauconda also counted Collin Shrader’s 43, Pat Adams’ 44 and Will Rudd’s 45.

  • Warren rolls; Zion-Benton eliminates Lakes May 27, 2014 11:12 PM
The last time the Warren boys volleyball team made it to the sectional, senior middle hitter Max Bongratz was barely out of grade school. But Bongratz and his teammates are well-versed on that history. It’s what motivates them to go a little harder in the state tournament, as they did Tuesday night at the Antioch regional. The top-seeded Blue Devils had little trouble knocking off a scrappy Waukegan team in the semifinals, 25-12, 25-15. Warren will now face No. 2 Zion-Benton in today’s regional championship game (6 p.m.) at Antioch.

  • Baseball / Lake County roundup May 20, 2014 11:38 PM
Libertyville’s baseball team celebrated more than the North Suburban Lake Division championship Tuesday. Anthony Mack fired a five-inning no-hitter, as the Wildcats defeated host Zion-Benton 5-0. Libertyville (26-5) finished 11-1 in the NSC Lake, one game ahead of Mundelein. The Wildcats will play Grant at 4:30 p.m. Thursday for the conference championship in Fox Lake.

  • Lake Zurich clinches NSC title game berth May 20, 2014 11:09 PM
Amanda Guercio and Mallory Parsons homered, and Lake Zurich’s softball team clinched a berth in Thursday’s North Suburban Conference championship game by beating visiting Mundelein 8-3 Tuesday.

  • Slota stellar in Lakes’ shutout win May 7, 2014 11:50 PM
Chase Slota dominated Grant en route to a 6-0 victory for Lakes’ baseball team Wednesday. Slota allowed just 1 hit, a bloop single to shallow right, and struck out six hitters, as the Eagles improved to 12-8 and 6-2 in the North Suburban Prairie Division.

  • Schneider, Guercio have it covered for Lake Zurich May 6, 2014 1:07 AM
Just remember that just one softball season ago, tall Lake Zurich catcher Amanda Guercio was playing softball for Lake Zurich Middle School South’s team. And actually, that team was pretty good, only falling in the end to Prairie School. The Bears (15-4, 5-2) also have a senior pitcher in 5-foot-1 Olivia Schneider. And a considerably taller freshman catcher in Guercio. Schneider did her job on Monday, limiting visiting Zion-Benton to 2 runs in 7 innings. And Guercio provided the offense for her new Bears with a 2-run homer and 2-run double. Lake Zurich avenged an earlier loss to the Zee-Bees with this 4-2 win.

  • Tall order? No big deal for St. Viator Mar 8, 2014 12:02 AM
The shorter team from the smaller school came up big. St. Viator, playing with the energy, desire and fight that is personified in its coach (former Lion point guard Mike Howland,) somehow survived being outsized by Zion-Benton and came away with a convincing 81-64 victory to win the Rolling Meadows IHSA Class 4A boys basketball regional on Friday night. Next up? Last year’s state runner-up, Jalen Brunson and Stevenson at the Lake Zurich sectional on Tuesday night. But first, the Lions (23-5) will savor a win over a tall, talented team that features a college-size front line and Lake County’s leading scorer, Milik Yarbrough.
