Grant’s NSC title effort covers the spectrum May 16, 2013 12:00 AM
If they needed more convincing that their season was a fairy tale come true, Grant's softball players needed only to crane their necks. Look, up in the sky. "I was waiting for my catcher," Bulldogs pitcher Caitlyn Moran said. "And then I was like, Oh, look. There's a rainbow.' "It was great," Moran added. "It just added to everything." A rainbow, which included a definitive Grant red, appeared late in Wednesday's North Suburban Conference championship game in Zion, as the visiting Bulldogs were completing a thrilling, 3-2 win Zion-Benton.

St. Viator knocks off Zion-Benton in sectionalsMar 7, 2013 12:00 AM
Down the stretch, St. Viator coach Mike Howland understandably had a lot of confidence in his group on the floor. And that's because over the last few years, seniors Kevin Hammarlund, Mayo Arogundade, Patrick Martin, Hugh Masterson and junior Ore Arogundade have developed quite a bit of chemistry with one another. Those five ensured the Lions would go one step further than last season as St. Viator beat Zion Benton 65-62.

Comeback against Z-B too tall an order for Fremd Mar 1, 2013 12:00 AM
There were plenty of similarities between Fremd’s win over Palatine in the regional semifinal and Friday’s Class 4A Deerfield regional final against Zion-Benton, as the Vikings spotted their opponent big leads in both contests. Unfortunately for No. 7 Fremd, the big difference against No. 2 Zion-Benton was that they couldn’t quite climb all the way back, and in the fourth quarter, the Zee-Bees enforced their will and dealt the Vikings a 61-46 defeat.

Youth again serves Fremd Feb 19, 2013 12:00 AM
First it was a freshman. This time a sophomore. The underclassmen on Fremd's girls basketball team sure know how to finish with a flair. Less than two weeks after Vikings freshman Brianna Lewis fired up a buzzer-beating 3-pointer in overtime to win the Mid-Suburban League championship, sophomore Haley Gorecki took her turn in the spotlight with some late-game magic. Instead of a 3-pointer to win it, Gorecki used a 3-point play to lift No. 2-seeded Fremd to a thrilling 55-54 come-from-behind victory over No. 3 Zion-Benton in the semifinals of the Class 4A Libertyville sectional on Monday night.

Zion-Benton too big a challenge for Grayslake NorthFeb 14, 2013 12:00 AM
Jumping from Class 3A to Class 4A was not going to be an easy task for the Grayslake North girls basketball team this season. Despite being one of the smaller schools in Class 4A this season, the sixth-seeded host Knights found themselves in the regional championship game Thursday night against No. 3 Zion-Benton. For three quarters, Grayslake North hung tough with the Zee-Bees, who took a 55-54 lead into the fourth quarter. But that would be the end of the road for the Knights, as the Zee-Bees went on a 13-0 run to start the fourth quarter in a 74-58 victory for the regional title. Zion-Benton (19-9) will face No. 2 Fremd (25-7) at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Libertyville sectional semifinals.

Z-B tops undermanned Mundelein Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Quinn Pokora wanted to give Mundelein an energy boost as he came off the bench for the first time all season a couple of minutes into Saturday’s North Suburban Lake boys basketball game with visiting Zion-Benton. The senior guard’s four 3-pointers and 14 first-quarter points were exactly the jolt the Mustangs needed a night after a disappointing loss at Libertyville. What the Mustangs didn’t need was Pokora taking his game-high 23 points and five 3s to the bench to stay with 2:18 to play when he fouled out. Especially with leads of 17 points in the second quarter and 15 with 1:08 left in the third were about to be sliced to one.And Pokora was powerless to do anything as Zion completed its second big comeback of the weekend with a 78-73 victory.

Prairie pride: Super victory for Vernon Hills Feb 6, 2013 12:00 AM
By edging Zion-Benton 51-50, Vernon Hills became the first Prairie Division team to win the NSC title game, which has been contested since 2001. "I think it's awesome for our division and also for our program to be the pioneers of this feat," said VH's Meri Bennett-Swanson, who scored 15 points on 7-of-14 shooting and collected 5 rebounds. "It's an amazing accomplishment."

Everything but the outcome suits Warren Jan 25, 2013 12:00 AM
After coming tantalizingly close to upsetting the North Suburban Lake Division champion Zee-Bees on Friday night in Zion, Warren's girls basketball team took an upbeat approach to a 60-58 loss that would not have occurred had the Blue Devils been able to handle Zion's full-court pressure and make their free throws.

Morrissey’s key 3s help power Stevenson Jan 18, 2013 12:00 AM
Stevenson sophomore Jalen Brunson has hit his share of big shots in just a little more than a season on the Patriots basketball team. But on Friday night, Brunson was more than happy admiring the big 3-pointers that came from teammate Matt Morrissey. Morrissey struck early, burying a pair 3-pointers during a 12-0 run to open a key North Suburban Conference Lake Division contest with visiting Zion-Benton. But his long arching 3-pointer on a feed from teammate Andy Stempel that Morrissey called "a champion's pass," fired up Brunson and the rest of the Patriot teammates. Though he finished with just 9 points, all of them counted in a 66-56 win for Stevenson over Zion on Friday night. The win lifts the Patriots to a first-place tie with Zion-Benton in the NSC Lake at 5-2. Stevenson is 13-4 overall and Zion is 14-4.

Yarbrough powers Zion-Benton past Lakes Jan 12, 2013 12:00 AM
Putting together a 20-1 run against a team as solid as Zion-Benton is not an easy task, but that’s what Lakes was able to do Saturday night in Lake Villa. Beginning midway through the second quarter and continuing for the first 2½ minutes of the third, the run enabled the Eagles to go up 35-27 in the North Suburban Conference crossover game. Trying to maintain that lead and prevail over the Zee-Bees proved to be a more difficult assignment for Lakes. Zion rallied from a 9-point deficit and hung on down the stretch to earn a 56-53 victory. Junior Milik Yarbrough scored 18 of Zion’s 22 fourth-quarter points and wound up with a game-high 30, while senior guard Gabriel Ramirez knocked down a quartet of 3-pointers for his 12 points in the Zee-Bees’ fifth consecutive triumph.

Zion-Benton stops Stevenson, takes command in NSC LakeDec 22, 2012 12:00 AM
It was a somber group of Stevenson players who exited the locker room Saturday afternoon. Determined to make amends for a 20-point loss to Zion-Benton on Nov. 29 and hopeful of extending their winning streak to 10 games, the Patriots outplayed the Zee-Bees in every facet of the game while fashioning a 21-16 halftime advantage. But while Zion righted its ship in the second half of the North Suburban Lake Division contest, Stevenson went adrift. The result was a 48-35 victory for the host Zee-Bees (11-2, 7-0), who now hold a 2-game division lead over the Patriots (9-5, 5-2).

Emotional win for Mundelein Dec 21, 2012 12:00 AM
Dedicating the game to longtime scorekeeper Jim Ackley, who passed away Tuesday at the age of 82, Mundelein started strong and never looked back in an 84-64 dismantling of host Zion-Benton Friday night. The Mustangs (6-4, 4-1) wore warm-up jerseys recognizing Ackley for his 50 years of service, then honored him with a performance that would have kept the popular scorekeeper busy all night. All five of Mundelein's senior starters scored in double figures in the North Suburban Lake Division contest.
