  • Warren rolls; Zion-Benton eliminates Lakes May 27, 2014 11:12 PM
The last time the Warren boys volleyball team made it to the sectional, senior middle hitter Max Bongratz was barely out of grade school. But Bongratz and his teammates are well-versed on that history. It’s what motivates them to go a little harder in the state tournament, as they did Tuesday night at the Antioch regional. The top-seeded Blue Devils had little trouble knocking off a scrappy Waukegan team in the semifinals, 25-12, 25-15. Warren will now face No. 2 Zion-Benton in today’s regional championship game (6 p.m.) at Antioch.

Libertyville’s baseball team celebrated more than the North Suburban Lake Division championship Tuesday. Anthony Mack fired a five-inning no-hitter, as the Wildcats defeated host Zion-Benton 5-0. Libertyville (26-5) finished 11-1 in the NSC Lake, one game ahead of Mundelein. The Wildcats will play Grant at 4:30 p.m. Thursday for the conference championship in Fox Lake.

  • Slota stellar in Lakes’ shutout win May 7, 2014 11:50 PM

  • Schneider, Guercio have it covered for Lake Zurich May 6, 2014 1:07 AM
Just remember that just one softball season ago, tall Lake Zurich catcher Amanda Guercio was playing softball for Lake Zurich Middle School South’s team. And actually, that team was pretty good, only falling in the end to Prairie School. The Bears (15-4, 5-2) also have a senior pitcher in 5-foot-1 Olivia Schneider. And a considerably taller freshman catcher in Guercio. Schneider did her job on Monday, limiting visiting Zion-Benton to 2 runs in 7 innings. And Guercio provided the offense for her new Bears with a 2-run homer and 2-run double. Lake Zurich avenged an earlier loss to the Zee-Bees with this 4-2 win.

  • Tall order? No big deal for St. Viator Mar 8, 2014 12:02 AM
The shorter team from the smaller school came up big. St. Viator, playing with the energy, desire and fight that is personified in its coach (former Lion point guard Mike Howland,) somehow survived being outsized by Zion-Benton and came away with a convincing 81-64 victory to win the Rolling Meadows IHSA Class 4A boys basketball regional on Friday night. Next up? Last year’s state runner-up, Jalen Brunson and Stevenson at the Lake Zurich sectional on Tuesday night. But first, the Lions (23-5) will savor a win over a tall, talented team that features a college-size front line and Lake County’s leading scorer, Milik Yarbrough.

BG set a school record for 3-pointers in a season (202) in the process.

  • Vernon Hills wins on Bahlmann's big shot Feb 13, 2014 12:13 AM
From the top of the key, Monica Bahlmann, No. 33, who already had hit two 3s, shot another 3. “As soon as it left her hand,” Vernon Hills girls basketball coach Paul Brettner said, “I'm like, 'Oh, my gosh. That's going in.' ” Must be. It splashed the net, sure enough. And 13 seconds later, Vernon Hills was celebrating a stunning 43-42 win over visiting Zion-Benton in the North Suburban Conference championship game Wednesday night. Bahlmann's heroics gave the Cougars their second NSC title in a row.

  • Emotional outcome as Zion-Benton clinches Lake Feb 8, 2014 11:51 PM
Zion-Benton’s girls basketball players had an important game to play Saturday. Which meant they couldn’t attend a benefit in Winthrop Harbor for a teammate’s ill stepdad. But, oh, did the Zee-Bees ever show up against host Stevenson in a winner-take-all North Suburban Lake Division finale. Zion-Benton played with poise down the stretch and pulled out a 61-54 win that earned the Zee-Bees a berth in Wednesday’s 7 p.m. NSC championship game at Vernon Hills.

  • Full recovery for Stevenson against Z-B Feb 8, 2014 12:05 AM
It could have been some bad fast food from earlier in the afternoon. “Or it might have been this morning’s breakfast,” Stevenson star guard Jalen Brunson said. “It might be the stomach flu. I just didn’t feel good the entire game.” But Brunson did his best on Friday night to ignore his weak stomach and guide Stevenson to an 81-63 North Suburban Conference victory over Zion-Benton in front of a standing-room-only crowd that included admirers such as Michigan State coach Tom Izzo and the entire coaching staff from the University of Illinois.

  • Yarbrough’s milestone night helps Z-B to victory Feb 4, 2014 11:13 PM
It was a record-setting night on multiple levels at Mundelein. Needing 30 points to catch former Deerfield star Ryan Hogan and become the all-time leading boys basketball scorer in Lake County history, Zion-Benton senior forward Milik Yarbrough scored 32 points to lead the Zee-Bees to a 70-64 win over the Mustangs in North Suburban Lake Division action Tuesday night.

  • Winning wears well on Mundelein Jan 25, 2014 10:26 PM
Practice won’t stink for Mundelein’s girls basketball team Monday. Not only should the Mustangs have a bounce in their step after their 10th win in 11 games — the latest being Saturday night’s 46-44 victory over Zion-Benton that knocked the Zee-Bees from the unbeaten ranks in the North Suburban Lake Division — but they won’t have to wear those ugly, smelly, reversible, PE-class tops.
