  • Cary-Grove chasing McHenry in FVC tournament Jan 25, 2013 12:00 AM
McHenry put the finishing touches on a strong first day at the 2013 Fox Valley Conference wrestling tournament Friday by sending 13 of 14 into today's semifinals to help keep its division rival Cary-Grove at bay when the competition came to a close at Jacobs Friday night. The top two clubs in the Valley division are separated by 10 points (90-80) when action resumes today at 9 a.m., while Crystal Lake South stands third overall with 68 points, followed closely by Huntley which is one point behind the Gators in fourth.

  • Hampshire holds off Woodstock North Jan 25, 2013 12:00 AM
Hampshire's boys basketball team certainly didn't play its best game of the season, but the Whip-Purs found a way to win. Tyler Crater added 16 for Hampshire in Fox Valley Conference Fox Division action in Woodstock. The Whips swept 2 games in Woodstock this week after beating Woodstock Tuesday night.

  • Ouch: Last-second loss stings Grayslake North Jan 5, 2013 12:00 AM
Seconds after his boys basketball squad lost on yet another buzzer-beater, Grayslake North coach Todd Grunloh ran to console a member of Team Grunloh. Kennedy Grunloh was crying loudly, and not because Lionel "Jr." Ortiz gave visiting Woodstock North a thrilling, 62-60 win in a Fox Valley Fox Division opener by sinking his winning shot over Kennedy's favorite player, A.J. Fish. "She fell," Grunloh said of his 3½-year-old daughter. "She must have been on the edge of her seat." Who wasn't?

  • Grayslake North wins outright Fox Division title Oct 19, 2012 12:00 AM
Grayslake North had already locked up a spot in this year's playoffs, not to mention at least a share of the Fox Valley Conference's Fox Division title heading into Friday night's clash at Woodstock North. A loss against the Thunder, and it still would be considered a very successful season for the Knights. But Grayslake North wanted to erase the memories of last year's season-ending loss to the Thunder and take home their first outright Fox Division crown. The Knights achieved both of those objectives with a 35-29 victory, bringing years of frustration and heartache to a screeching halt.

  • Woodstock North rattles Hampshire Oct 12, 2012 12:00 AM
The Fox Valley Conference’s first-ever game in Fairbanks, Alaska between Hampshire and Woodstock North was a huge success, and the conference would like to hold more games in exotic locales, preferably Jamaica or Cancun. But seriously, it only felt like Alaska in northern Woodstock, but the Thunder put the Whip-Purs’ offense in a deep freeze in a 46-14 Fox Division win.

  • Two-way seniors benefit Woodstock North Oct 5, 2012 12:00 AM
You might think all those two-way starters in Woodstock North's lineup would just fall down from exhaustion in the second half of football games. No such thing, evidently. After a scoreless tie following one quarter in Grayslake, the Thunder used a pair of those two-way players to pull away from the Rams and at the same time become playoff eligible. The Thunder (5-2, 3-1) scored 27 unanswered points and beat Central 39-7 on Friday night.

  • Dundee-Crown comeback falls short Sep 28, 2012 12:00 AM
The Chargers’ comeback came up 5 yards short. With Dundee-Crown driving and a chance to tie, the Chargers were stopped at the Woodstock North 5-yard line on third down. They settled for RJ Schmidt’s 22-yard field goal. D-C got the ball back with a chance to go ahead, but a holding penalty killed the momentum and quarterback Garrett Ryan was sacked on fourth down. The Thunder took over and ran out the clock, holding on for a 25-20 Fox Valley Conference crossover victory in Woodstock Friday night.

  • Lakes pops for convincing win Aug 31, 2012 12:00 AM
The Lakes football program paid tribute to all of the football dads at Polley Field on Friday night. Those dads roamed the Lakes sideline in Eagle uniforms and were given a close-up view of the action. They were all smiles afterward as their sons paid them the ultimate tribute with a 21-7 victory over Woodstock North in a nonconference matchup.

  • Hampshire’s Kyle Anderson (9) hands off last season. The Whip-Purs are hoping to improve in their second year in the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division.

FVC Fox competitive top to bottom Aug 22, 2012 12:00 AM
A football team has to be pretty sly these days to win the competitive Fox Division of the Fox Valley Conference outright. Three teams shared the Fox Division crown last season: Crystal Lake Central (6-4, 5-1), Grayslake Central (7-3, 5-1) and third-year program Woodstock North (7-3, 5-1). All three made the playoffs but lost in the first round. CL Central looks like the team to beat in this year's FVC Fox hunt, according to most league coaches, but the Tigers will likely be challenged by offensive powerhouse Grayslake North and skilled Woodstock North.

  • Grayslake Central: FVC Fox champs Feb 17, 2012 12:00 AM
Grayslake Central’s boys basketball team knew what was at stake when it hosted Woodstock North on Friday night. If the Rams won and Grayslake North lost, the Rams would clinch the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division. Mission accomplished, as the Rams held the Thunder to 5 points in the first quarter and went on to win 69-47, while Grayslake North lost to Huntley 79-58. It was Grayslake Central coach Brian Moe’s second division championship in his fourth year.

  • Hampshire nabs 4th straight regional title Feb 17, 2012 12:00 AM
Looking at the 52-43 final score and assuming that Hampshire cruised past Woodstock North in the final of the Class 3A Hampshire girls basketball regional Friday night would be a serious mistake. The Whip-Purs faced plenty of adversity, some dished out by the Thunder, and some of their own making. But they gritted it out to win their fourth straight regional title and advance to the Sycamore sectional, where they will face Kaneland (19-9) at 8:10 p.m. Monday.

  • Hampshire falls to Woodstock North Feb 7, 2012 12:00 AM
Hampshire’s girls basketball team usually strives on its defense and strong guard play. Woodstock North took both of those things away from the Whip-Purs in Tuesday’s Fox Valley Conference Fox Division game in Woodstock. The Whips piled up the turnovers and the Thunder converted them into points taking the game 54-45.

  • Larkin takes title at Hoops for Healing Nov 26, 2011 12:00 AM
After winning a total of 4 games last year, Larkin’s boys basketball team didn’t waste much time in getting to 4 this season. The Royals’ fourth victory in as many games earned them the championship honors at the Woodstock/Woodstock North Hoops for Healing Tournament Saturday. Larkin (4-0) finished the tournament tied with Belvidere and Rockton Hononegah with perfect 4-0 marks. The first tiebreaker was total points allowed meaning Larkin was going to have to limit a pesky Woodstock North (1-3) to no more than 46 points in Saturday’s final game. With a tough defensive stand, the Royals took a 62-45 victory over the Thunder to close out the tournament.

  • Woodstock North nips Grayslake N. Oct 21, 2011 12:00 AM
A storied rivalry was not one of the storylines when Grayslake North hosted Woodstock North on Friday. Woodstock North is playing its third varsity season, while Grayslake North is in its sixth year. The two teams delivered a wide variety of offensive fireworks and at the end of the night, the visiting Thunder were posing for a team photo to commemorate its first playoff berth. Woodstock North won 47-35 and also clinched a share of the Fox Valley Fox title. Grayslake North led 28-13 at halftime, but the Thunder roared from behind to score 34 straight points in the second half.
