  • Hampshire’s push to playoff berth continues Oct 4, 2013 11:09 PM
Hampshire turned in a complete performance. Coming off a lopsided loss last week, the Whip-Purs excelled in all three phases while downing Woodstock North, 42-12, in Fox Valley Conference Fox Division play Hampshire Friday night. Nick Kielbasa ran for 167 yards and 3 scores, and Mason Fleury scored twice for the Whips, who moved to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the league.

  • Great start, great outcome for Lakes at Woodstock N. Sep 6, 2013 11:46 PM
If you were at Woodstock North on Friday night, you may have caught a glimpse of Lakes coach Luke Mertens pinching himself. Mertens witnessed his Eagles get off to a dream start on both sides of the ball as the Eagles built a commanding lead on their way to a 45-14 nonconference victory over the Woodstock North Thunder.

  • Wauconda passes up Woodstock N. in a thriller Aug 31, 2013 12:05 AM
Wauconda sophomore quarterback Kevin Malisheski told his receiver, Josh Anderson, that if he got open his pass was destined for a touchdown. For a game delayed for about 90 minutes, both Wauconda and visiting Woodstock North put on a show that was worthy of a playoff game. For the home-standing Bulldogs, it looked like North’s 13-7 lead would last the entire game. That’s before a 16-second span of plays that turned the game around.

  • Hampshire hoping to make some noise in FVC Fox Aug 26, 2013 9:31 PM
If defense wins games Hampshire’s football team should be feeling rather good about itself. Whip-Purs coach Dan Cavanaugh, the dean of Fox Valley area football coaches in his 25th season, likes the makeup of his defense, which returns plenty of talent and experience up front in Leighton Sheetz (6-0, 275, DT), Mike Gibas (6-2, 240), Matt Kielbasa (6-2, 250, DE) and Steve Kirkwood (5-10, 185, DE). Inside linebackers Brandan Swanson (6-0, 170) and Ben Bednarek (5-10, 210) also are back.

  • FVC Valley wide open, but don’t count out Cary-Grove Aug 26, 2013 8:21 PM
It’s probably not a good idea to sell the Cary-Grove football team short. Despite graduating a large portion of last year’s team that reached the Class 6A state title game, third-year coach Brad Seaburg is far from waving a white flag for the defending Fox Valley Conference Valley Division champions. “We have the athleticism and we’re starting to see some leadership emerging,” he said of his junior-heavy lineup. “On paper and after seeing what we’ve seen in practice with our enthusiasm, effort and execution so far, we feel like we should be able to compete for a conference championship, for sure.”

  • Hampshire notches share of FVC Fox titl Feb 19, 2013 11:16 PM
The celebration was muted considering the magnitude of the accomplishment. The Hampshire boys basketball players shook hands with their counterparts from Woodstock North after Tuesday’s 63-46 Senior Night victory, displaying few outward signs of having just clinched a share of the program’s first title as a member of the Fox Valley Conference. Sure, there were high fives, satisfied smiles and assorted flying hip bumps, but nothing too crazy. No Gatorade buckets were dumped over coach Bob Barnett’s head or anything of the sort. “This is too nice of a suit for a Gatorade bucket,” reminded Barnett, nattily attired as always. “They don’t have the money to pay for the dry cleaning.”

  • Crystal Lake South’s pressure produces win Feb 8, 2013 10:57 PM
Lauren Del Vecchio loves the labor that goes with playing the point in Crystal Lake South’s diamond-and-one, full-court pressure. “It’s my favorite position,” the 6-foot senior said. “I like to watch their eyes and get up on them. It gets me going and helps get the team going.” There was no doubt about how much defense got the Gators rolling in Friday night’s Fox Valley Conference girls basketball crossover. They turned 27 turnovers into 20 points and pitched a third-quarter shutout in a 50-32 victory over visiting Woodstock North at Gator Alley.

  • Free throws the difference in Hampshire loss Feb 5, 2013 11:12 PM
Free throws made the difference. Woodstock North led almost all the way, then survived a furious late rally to defeat Hampshire, 43-40, in Fox Valley Conference Fox Division girls basketball action in Hampshire Tuesday night. Down by 6, the Whip-Purs converted steals on consecutive possessions into 5 points to get within 1 on Jenny Dumoulin’s 3-pointer. After Woodstock answered with a free throw, Hampshire got to the line with a chance to tie but missed the first of the one-and-one. Samantha Ahr then added a free throw for the final margin.

  • Cullen still unbeaten; Cary-Grove 2nd in FVC Jan 26, 2013 9:12 PM
It was clear going into Saturday's Fox Valley Conference finals that Crystal Lake Central's five-year reign as the league wrestling champion was over. The question was, would Cary-Grove's navy and white or McHenry's black and orange be the new colors of FVC wrestling royalty. McHenry's lead wasn't safe up only 10 points after Friday's prelims but sending 13 of 14 into the semifinals to Cary-Grove's 10 didn't seem to make the Warriors nervous. The Trojans closed in early with first place wins in 2 of the first 3 matches and watched three wrestlers earn titles, but McHenry grew stronger in the heavier classes and garnered 3 first-place winners, 3 second-place winners and 4 third-place medals to grab the overall championship over Cary-Grove, 261.50-210.

  • Cary-Grove chasing McHenry in FVC tournament Jan 25, 2013 11:30 PM
McHenry put the finishing touches on a strong first day at the 2013 Fox Valley Conference wrestling tournament Friday by sending 13 of 14 into today's semifinals to help keep its division rival Cary-Grove at bay when the competition came to a close at Jacobs Friday night. The top two clubs in the Valley division are separated by 10 points (90-80) when action resumes today at 9 a.m., while Crystal Lake South stands third overall with 68 points, followed closely by Huntley which is one point behind the Gators in fourth.

  • Hampshire holds off Woodstock North Jan 25, 2013 10:14 PM
Hampshire's boys basketball team certainly didn't play its best game of the season, but the Whip-Purs found a way to win. Shane Hernandez scored 24 points as Hampshire held on to beat Woodstock North, 65-62, Friday night in Woodstock. Tyler Crater added 16 for Hampshire in Fox Valley Conference Fox Division action in Woodstock. The Whips swept 2 games in Woodstock this week after beating Woodstock Tuesday night.

  • Grayslake North wins FVC crown Jan 25, 2013 10:58 PM
Sarah Littleton shot a six-game series of 1,182 Friday to lead Grayslake North to the Fox Valley Conference girls bowling championship at Raymond's Bowl in Johnsburg. The Knights shot 5,278 as a team. Second place Grayslake Central had a 4,991 and third place McHenry a 4,907. Littleton's best game was a 235. She also had a 231 and a 202. Kait Christiansen had a 1,075 for Grayslake North, while Catherine Kowalski scored a 1,054. Jess Vaughn had 987 and Made Bertermann 980 to lead the Knights to the title. Grayslake Central was led by Kendal Roemer with a 1,045, which was good for fifth place overall. Sarah Polsgrove shot a 1,040 for the Rams with Josie Taylor coming in at 1,003. Katie Adkins had a 952 and Ilona Katsman a 951. Jacobs finished fourth with a 4,818. The Golden Eagles were led by a 1,009 from Lyric Dodson. Dundee-Crown, led by a 1,012 from Angela Tripp, was sixth with a 4,724 and Huntley came in seventh with a 4,636. Amy Antczak led the Red Raiders with a 1,018. Johnsburg's Allison Boelter, who finished ninth overall, had the high game of the day with a 267.

  • Ouch: Last-second loss stings Grayslake North Jan 5, 2013 11:36 PM
Seconds after his boys basketball squad lost on yet another buzzer-beater, Grayslake North coach Todd Grunloh ran to console a member of Team Grunloh. Kennedy Grunloh was crying loudly, and not because Lionel "Jr." Ortiz gave visiting Woodstock North a thrilling, 62-60 win in a Fox Valley Fox Division opener by sinking his winning shot over Kennedy's favorite player, A.J. Fish. "She fell," Grunloh said of his 3½-year-old daughter. "She must have been on the edge of her seat." Who wasn't?

  • Wauconda gamely gets it done Dec 10, 2012 11:15 PM
Wauconda's boys basketball team wound up cruising to a 47-30 nonconference victory over Woodstock North on Monday. The Bulldogs have won three games in a row and improve to 4-5.

  • Grayslake North wins outright Fox Division title Oct 20, 2012 12:03 AM
Grayslake North had already locked up a spot in this year's playoffs, not to mention at least a share of the Fox Valley Conference's Fox Division title heading into Friday night's clash at Woodstock North. A loss against the Thunder, and it still would be considered a very successful season for the Knights. But Grayslake North wanted to erase the memories of last year's season-ending loss to the Thunder and take home their first outright Fox Division crown. The Knights achieved both of those objectives with a 35-29 victory, bringing years of frustration and heartache to a screeching halt.

  • Woodstock North rattles Hampshire Oct 12, 2012 11:47 PM
The Fox Valley Conference’s first-ever game in Fairbanks, Alaska between Hampshire and Woodstock North was a huge success, and the conference would like to hold more games in exotic locales, preferably Jamaica or Cancun. But seriously, it only felt like Alaska in northern Woodstock, but the Thunder put the Whip-Purs’ offense in a deep freeze in a 46-14 Fox Division win.

  • Two-way seniors benefit Woodstock North Oct 5, 2012 11:51 PM
You might think all those two-way starters in Woodstock North's lineup would just fall down from exhaustion in the second half of football games. No such thing, evidently. After a scoreless tie following one quarter in Grayslake, the Thunder used a pair of those two-way players to pull away from the Rams and at the same time become playoff eligible. The Thunder (5-2, 3-1) scored 27 unanswered points and beat Central 39-7 on Friday night.

  • Dundee-Crown comeback falls short Sep 28, 2012 11:36 PM
The Chargers’ comeback came up 5 yards short. With Dundee-Crown driving and a chance to tie, the Chargers were stopped at the Woodstock North 5-yard line on third down. They settled for RJ Schmidt’s 22-yard field goal. D-C got the ball back with a chance to go ahead, but a holding penalty killed the momentum and quarterback Garrett Ryan was sacked on fourth down. The Thunder took over and ran out the clock, holding on for a 25-20 Fox Valley Conference crossover victory in Woodstock Friday night.
