  • Underdog Rosary keeps surprising postseason run alive Feb 23, 2015 10:33 PM
Records can be deceiving. Despite owning a 13-17 record, Rosary’s girls basketball team is rewriting its record book this season. For the first time in school history, the Royals find themselves a win away from a sectional championship after hanging on for a 55-50 victory over Woodstock (19-12) in Monday night’s Hampshire Class 3A sectional semifinals.

After clinching the regional title Thursday, Woodstock High School's girls basketball team posed for a picture with a Barbie doll — their symbol of “girl power” — stuck on a crucifix at a Catholic school. The image shows the girls pointing at the cross, hanging at Marian Central Catholic High School. “Both administrations are trying to work through this incident,” Marian Central Athletic Director Drew Potthoff said Saturday.

  • Jacobs nails down first FVC title Jan 31, 2015 9:40 PM
After finding itself on top of the competition at the end of day one of the Fox Valley Conference Tournament on Friday, Jacobs’ wrestling team had one goal in mind: win the FVC for the first time in school history. Despite being one of two Top 10 teams without an individual conference championship, the Golden Eagles had 14 wrestlers battle for a Top 5 spot and needed every one of them to hold off McHenry and win the conference title. Jacobs finished with 208.5 points, 7 ahead of the host school, Saturday afternoon at McHenry.

  • Jacobs in good position to win first FVC crown Jan 30, 2015 10:37 PM
What a difference a year makes. Last season, a less than sparkling opening day at the Fox Valley Conference wrestling tournament all but erased the hopes for Jacobs of a top four finish. On Friday, things were different for coach Gary Conrads’ club and with the Golden Eagles on the front foot from the opening bout, Jacobs finds itself heading into Saturday’s final day of the conference tournament with an 8-point lead, 105-97 over host McHenry, and 23-more than division rival Cary-Grove (82.0) which enjoyed a solid first day.

  • Game effort, but no win for Grayslake North Jan 24, 2015 10:00 PM
Grayslake North’s weekend in Washington included four games. And more games. “They made a game ‘American Idol’ and ‘America’s Got Talent,’ ” freshman guard Brandi Thibeaux said of her teammates. “It was just crazy.” The Knights got singing talent? Maybe not. “It wasn’t the best,” Thibeaux said with a laugh. “It was funny, though.” Winners of four straight games for the first time this season, Grayslake North flashed its basketball talents Saturday against visiting Woodstock. Unfortunately for the Knights, it went as well as their singing in central Illinois last weekend. Woodstock saw an 11-point lead early in the second half trimmed to one on three occasions, including twice in the fourth quarter, before capturing a 46-38 decision in a Fox Valley Fox Division contest.

  • Woods’ putback propels Hampshire past Woodstock Jan 20, 2015 10:51 PM
It figured that Brennen Woods would score the winning basket at the overtime buzzer. Hampshire’s sophomore forward had done just about everything else to lead the Whip-Purs to an improbable 74-73 win against Woodstock in Fox Valley Fox Division action in Hampshire. With time running out and Hampshire down a point, Drew Doran’s long jumper caromed off the rim. But Woods raced down the lane untouched and put it in, the last of his 30 points on the evening.

  • Close call, but Grayslake North falls Dec 12, 2014 11:17 PM
As Woodstock’s gym emptied to the sounds of happy home fans and blaring music, Grayslake North’s boys basketball players sat quietly on their bench and changed into their sweats. There was ample room for a team that, apparently, didn’t need its locker room. “I thought they would have gone in, but I guess they’re used to changing out here,” Knights coach Todd Grunloh said. “Maybe they wanted to put on a show for everyone.” The better show by the visitors came in the fourth quarter. Grayslake North erased a nine-point deficit with 5½ minutes left, only to fall 55-54 in a Fox Valley Fox Division opener Friday night.

  • Jacobs Van Vlierbergen makes it a FVC trifecta Oct 18, 2014 8:43 PM
Muddy, wet conditions. Didn’t matter. Annoying mist. Didn’t matter. You get the picture. Nothing was going to deter Jacobs senior standout Lauren Van Vlierbergen from capturing her third straight Fox Valley Conference individual championship. Van Vlierbergen, who finished fourth in Class 3A in 2013, posted a 3-mile time of 17:53.8 to finish first at Saturday’s Fox Valley Conference girls cross country championship at Hickory Nut Grove Park in Cary.

  • Defense joins the fun as Grayslake North wins by shutout Oct 10, 2014 11:47 PM
After a tough loss on the road last week at Crystal Lake Central, the Grayslake North defense did something Friday night in a homecoming contest with visiting Woodstock that it had done just one other time in school history – that is, pitch a shutout. Woodstock was held to just 192 total yards from scrimmage and 10 first downs as the Knights bounced back with a resounding 42-0 win over the Blue Streaks. The only other shutout North has had in its history came in a 34-0 win over Mendota in 2011.

  • Burba’s big hit all right with Grayslake Central Jun 4, 2014 10:07 PM
Grayslake Central’s baseball team had the right guy up. The lefty hitter who plays left field. “Pat gets up and does what he did last year — get clutch hits,” winning pitcher Justin Guryn said. Exactly right. Pat Burba — who else? — delivered with the bat Wednesday, lifting the Rams to a 2-1 victory over “Cinderella” Woodstock in a Class 3A sectional semifinal at Marian Central Catholic in Woodstock. Burba’s one-out, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh gave Grayslake Central (27-10) a walk-off win — after the Blue Streaks tied the score in the top of the inning — and earned the Rams a berth in Saturday’s 11 a.m. final against the winner of today’s 3 p.m. game between Vernon Hills and Gordon Tech.

  • Grayslake North’s Booker streaks past FVC field May 16, 2014 11:13 PM

Booker sprinted past the field at Friday night’s Fox Valley Conference meet held at Crystal Lake Central, winning the 100 meters in 11.06 and the 200 in a clocking of 22.20. “I just ran with my heart tonight and it worked out very well,” said the talented Knights junior. “I knew it would be good competition tonight so I trained hard. I feel very confident going into the sectionals next week.” McHenry, led by junior distance standout Jesse Reiser, claimed the conference championship with a score of 103.50.

Cary-Grove (15-10, 7-4) was named the No. 1 seed at the Crystal Lake Central regional, followed by Fox Valley Conference Valley Division brethren Prairie Ridge (15-10, 6-5), Jacobs (13-12, 7-3), Crystal Lake South (14-10, 3-7) and Dundee-Crown (6-16, 2-8).
