  • Cary-Grove a surprising No. 1 seedFeb 20, 2014 12:00 AM
Cary-Grove coach Ralph Schuetzle and Jacobs coach Jimmy Roberts expressed surprise for different reasons when seeds for the upcoming Class 4A Elgin boys basketball sectional were released on the IHSA website Thursday afternoon. Cary-Grove (15-10, 7-4) was named the No. 1 seed at the Crystal Lake Central regional, followed by Fox Valley Conference Valley Division brethren Prairie Ridge (15-10, 6-5), Jacobs (13-12, 7-3), Crystal Lake South (14-10, 3-7) and Dundee-Crown (6-16, 2-8). Crystal Lake Central (3-21, 2-8 FVC Fox) is the No. 6 seed.

Crystal Lake South happy with FVC runner-up finish Feb 1, 2014 12:00 AM
Sure, Crystal Lake South coach Ross Ryan would like to have hoisted the Fox Valley Conference wrestling tournament championship trophy Saturday at McHenry High School. But Ryan was happy with his team’s second place conference finish. Wrestling without 195-pounder Brian Pence, the Gators (163 ½ points) were runner-up to Crystal Lake Central, which claimed top honors with 199 points. Cary-Grove was third a half point behind South with 163 points.

McHenry will head into the final day of the Fox Valley Conference wrestling tournament just ahead of Crystal Lake Central and CL South when action resumes Saturday morning, beginning with the semifinal round at the Warriors’ West campus. Both Central and South trail McHenry by 4.5 points, 88.5 — 84.0, while Dundee-Crown and Huntley round out the top 5 with 75 and 71 overall points. Cary-Grove stands sixth with 70 points.

  • Hampshire comes up just short at Woodstock Jan 21, 2014 12:00 AM
Hampshire just came up one shot short. The Whip-Purs made a couple of key shots down the stretch, but couldn’t get a final one to go down, and they fell to Woodstock, 61-59, in Fox Valley Conference Fox Division boys basketball action in Woodstock Tuesday night.

  • Burlington Central’s Brett Rau grabs the loose ball as teammate Duncan Ozburn and Woodstock’s Damian Stoneking reach from the floor Wednesday in Burlington.

Burlington Central wins with defense Jan 15, 2014 12:00 AM
On a night when its offense was as frigid as the temperature outside, the Burlington Central boys basketball team relied on defense to win. The Rockets, who made just 13 of 56 shots for 23 percent, wreaked havoc on Woodstock defensively and pulled away late in the fourth quarter for a 37-28 nonconference win on Rocket Hill. “We battled and found a way to get the W,” said Central coach Brett Porto. “It wasn’t pretty and there were a lot of people shaking their heads but someone had to win and we won.”

  • Burlington Central preparing to leave Big Northern Nov 18, 2013 12:00 AM
Burlington Central intends to leave the Big Northern Conference to join a new league, and the Rockets have company. Under a proposal presented to the District 301 school board by Burlington Central principal Matthew Haug and athletic director Steve Diversey at Monday’s meeting, the school would withdraw from the Big Northern Conference’s East Division following the 2014-15 school year along with Marengo, Harvard and Genoa-Kingston, all original members of the BNC, founded in 1991.

  • With regrets, Grayslake Central’s season is over Oct 25, 2013 12:00 AM
Coming up short is never enjoyable. The little things, such as leaving a putt short on the golf course or hitting a baseball to the warning track, provide momentary disbelief. Failing to capitalize on an opportunity to make the state playoffs brings with it a bit more disappointment as Grayslake Central and its fans experienced Friday night in a 30-20 loss to Woodstock in the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division season finale.

  • Rams wraps up FVC Fox title Oct 15, 2013 12:00 AM
A senior-dominated defense has been a big reason for Grayslake Central’s success on the soccer field this season. On senior night, the “Ram Tough” defense produced a shutout in a division-clinching win. Grayslake Central rolled past visiting Woodstock 7-0 Thursday night to wrap up the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division championship.

  • Hampshire on track for playoff berth Oct 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Woodstock came prepared to stop Hampshire’s primary weapon, but it had no answer for Hampshire’s other weapons. Hampshire’s first play from scrimmage was a 62-yard touchdown pass from Nick Mohlmann to Tim Jansen. That opening play was the springboard for a 48-7 Fox Valley Conference Fox Division victory Friday night that left Hampshire playoff-eligible at 5-2.

  • Mooney’s money again for Jacobs Sep 27, 2013 12:00 AM
Jacobs believes every offensive possession should produce points. That’s why the Golden Eagles used two timeouts on defense to get one final shot to score in the first half of their Fox Valley Conference football crossover with visiting Woodstock on Friday night in Algonquin. They came up empty after getting the ball at their 39-yard line with only 36.6 seconds left. But the first-team offense scored on its other seven possessions and Jacobs (3-2) piled up 502 total yards to extend its winning streak to three games with a 43-21 victory.

  • Grayslake North rolls over Woodstock Sep 12, 2013 12:00 AM
As the Grayslake North football team serenaded the fans and cheerleaders with the school fight song after the Knights’ Fox Valley Conference Fox Division opener with visiting Woodstock, sophomore quarterback Merrick Gentile decided singing just wasn’t his forte. “I can sing, I guess,” the sheepish Gentile said. “I don’t know if I am good at it but I will try.” He ended up belting out a few cords of the fight song before he walked away and took a quick glance at the scoreboard in the North end zone. The final tally, a 42-14 Knights’ win over Woodstock, was a testament to another scintillating performance by the first-year starter.

  • Head coach Vito Andriola watches his Dundee-Crown football team at a recent practice.

FVC Valley wide open, but don’t count out Cary-Grove Aug 26, 2013 12:00 AM
It’s probably not a good idea to sell the Cary-Grove football team short. Despite graduating a large portion of last year’s team that reached the Class 6A state title game, third-year coach Brad Seaburg is far from waving a white flag for the defending Fox Valley Conference Valley Division champions. “We have the athleticism and we’re starting to see some leadership emerging,” he said of his junior-heavy lineup. “On paper and after seeing what we’ve seen in practice with our enthusiasm, effort and execution so far, we feel like we should be able to compete for a conference championship, for sure.”

  • Wide receiver Rayne Yap catches a pass during drills at Hampshire High School.

Hampshire hoping to make some noise in FVC Fox Aug 26, 2013 12:00 AM
If defense wins games Hampshire’s football team should be feeling rather good about itself. Whip-Purs coach Dan Cavanaugh, the dean of Fox Valley area football coaches in his 25th season, likes the makeup of his defense, which returns plenty of talent and experience up front in Leighton Sheetz (6-0, 275, DT), Mike Gibas (6-2, 240), Matt Kielbasa (6-2, 250, DE) and Steve Kirkwood (5-10, 185, DE). Inside linebackers Brandan Swanson (6-0, 170) and Ben Bednarek (5-10, 210) also are back.

  • Winter storm postpones boys playoff basketball games Mar 5, 2013 12:00 AM
The winter storm hitting the suburbs today has caused several boys high school playoff games to be postponed until Wednesday.

  • Ledinsky saves the day for Jacobs Feb 22, 2013 12:00 AM
With the game still undecided, Jacobs senior forward Nick Ledinsky made sure the Golden Eagles would end the regular season with a victory with some late game heroics at both ends of the court. Ledinsky, who nailed a 3-pointer to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good, 52-49 with 2:36 remaining, blocked am 18-footer from Woodstock's Jordan Turner at the buzzer. The end result was a Jacobs 54-52 win over the Blue Streaks in a battle of third place teams in Fox Valley Conference crossover boys basketball action in Algonquin Friday night.

  • Cary-Grove’s Michael Cullen is pulled down to the mat by Huntley’s Zach Stenger in the 113-pound championship match at the Fox Valley Conference finals on Saturday. Cullen took the win.

    Cullen still unbeaten; Cary-Grove 2nd in FVC Jan 26, 2013 12:00 AM
It was clear going into Saturday's Fox Valley Conference finals that Crystal Lake Central's five-year reign as the league wrestling champion was over. The question was, would Cary-Grove's navy and white or McHenry's black and orange be the new colors of FVC wrestling royalty. McHenry's lead wasn't safe up only 10 points after Friday's prelims but sending 13 of 14 into the semifinals to Cary-Grove's 10 didn't seem to make the Warriors nervous. The Trojans closed in early with first place wins in 2 of the first 3 matches and watched three wrestlers earn titles, but McHenry grew stronger in the heavier classes and garnered 3 first-place winners, 3 second-place winners and 4 third-place medals to grab the overall championship over Cary-Grove, 261.50-210.

  • Cary-Grove chasing McHenry in FVC tournament Jan 25, 2013 12:00 AM
McHenry put the finishing touches on a strong first day at the 2013 Fox Valley Conference wrestling tournament Friday by sending 13 of 14 into today's semifinals to help keep its division rival Cary-Grove at bay when the competition came to a close at Jacobs Friday night. The top two clubs in the Valley division are separated by 10 points (90-80) when action resumes today at 9 a.m., while Crystal Lake South stands third overall with 68 points, followed closely by Huntley which is one point behind the Gators in fourth.
