  • Aurora extends holiday decoration removal deadline Mar 5, 2013 12:00 AM
    Aurora is extending its deadline for taking down Christmas decorations because, of all things, snow. The city prohibits residents from displaying outdoor decorations for more than 60 days before or after a holiday, meaning Feb. 25 was the original deadline for removing Christmas decor. But spokesman Dan Ferrelli said Tuesday the deadline has been extended to March 18 because of several recent snowfalls that made it tougher to remove the items.

    The Chicago suburbs are digging out from the largest snow event of the winter season just a few weeks after it looked like the area was on track for one of the least snow-filled seasons in history. Only 3.5 inches of snow were recorded at O'Hare as of Jan. 31, and comparisons were being made to the winter of 1920-21, when only 9.8 inches fell.

Snow is starting to fall at both O’Hare International Airport and the western suburbs, as what is expected to be the largest snowstorm of the year descends upon the Chicago area. The National Weather Service pushed back the start and end times of the winter storm advisory. Now, the advisory runs from 9 a.m. until midnight Wednesday. Meteorologists believe up to 10-inches of snow is possible before the snowstorm moves out of the area.

    The National Weather Service says a winter storm could bring up to 10 inches of snow to northern Illinois tonight and Tuesday. The service has issued a winter storm warning that starts at 3 a.m. Tuesday and lasts throughout the day. Forecasters say snow is expected to be heavy from late Tuesday morning through early Tuesday evening with 1 to 1 ˝ inches falling an hour. Weather service officials say snow removal could be difficult and travel extremely dangerous. Winds are forecast to gust at between 25 and 30 mph.
