    Even before the snowstorm hit the Northeast, airlines were already canceling flights. It’s a strategy that has served airlines well in recent years: Cancel flights early and keep planes and crews — and passengers — away from snowed-in airports. The idea is to avoid having crews and planes stuck in one area of the country. Airlines also face fines for leaving passengers stuck on a plane for more than three hours.

    A more than 30-vehicle pileup on a snowy Indiana interstate left at least 10 people injured Thursday, including at least one critically, and shut down a heavily traveled highway for most of the evening, authorities said. Most of the injuries in the afternoon pileup along Interstate 70 were minor, but one victim's condition was "very critical," Indiana State Police Sgt. Rich Myers said.

    Tuesday started with record-breaking temperatures and ended with less rain than expected in advance of the cold front that will send us back to normal January weather today. Temperatures reached 60 degrees at O'Hare International Airport at 6:50 a.m., and peaked at 63 degrees at 1:27 p.m., making it the warmest Jan. 29 in history. "We've got a lot of reports of between one and 1½ inches," a meterologist said Tuesday night.

  • Cold may be cause for several suburban deaths Jan 22, 2013 12:00 AM
    Several suburban deaths, including a man who died in his unheated home, are being investigated to determine if the extreme cold weather is to blame. Investigators at the Cook County Medical Examiner's office say the Des Plaines man's death is one of seven related to the cold spell that has frozen the area for the past two days.
