    A first-half goal from Kris Lopez and a second-half strike from Oliver Horgan kick-started No. 2 seed Lake Park’s opening effort to reach the final stages of the Class 3A boys soccer state tournament with a 2-0 victory over Willowbrook on Tuesday night in a regional semifinal at Schaumburg. Next up for Lancers coach Anthony Passi’s team will be the host Saxons, who defeated Glenbard North later Tuesday.

     
  • Villa Park teen memorialized with tree-planting ceremony Oct 17, 2014 5:43 PM
    A tree-planting ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday at Willowbrook Park in remembrance of a 17-year-old who died this past March in a hit-and-run crash. Emilio Perez would have been a senior at Willowbrook High School in Villa Park this year. His family is planting a tree at the park across the street from the school to remember Emilio in a positive way. “He was a very kind, loving kid,” said his aunt, Dolly Alvarez. “At his funeral there were so many young people that came and told stories about Emilio that just showed how much he cared about people."

     
  • State seeks input on revamping social studies standards Oct 13, 2014 7:33 PM
    State education officials are seeking input from students, educators, parents and taxpayers on new civic course requirements and social studies learning standards in Illinois. The Illinois Task Force on Civic Education is hosting a series of public hearings to discuss its recent report submitted to Gov. Pat Quinn and the General Assembly in May. The next hearing is from 4 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 15 at Willowbrook High School, 1250 S. Ardmore Ave., Villa Park.

     
  • Lillie leads St. Charles North to runner-up sectioanl finish Oct 13, 2014 11:29 PM
    It was a scramble from start to the finish at the Conant girls sectional golf meet at Fox Run in Elk Grove. Maine South won the team title with a 328, while St. Charles North was second with a 331. The scramble began at third place, where both Wheaton Warrenville South and Oak Park tied with a 337. Wheaton Warrenville South was awarded the final team spot at this weekend’s Class AA state finals based on the fifth score, as Emma Field’s score was lower than the 101 from Oak Park’s Sophie Mouros. Tying for the 10th and final individual qualifying berth were Glenbard West’s Samantha Moody, Elk Grove’s Erin Walz, Lake Park’s Nicole Hansen and Burlington Central’s Josie Kurosky. Each shot an 84 - they will try to settle the issue with a playoff beginning at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

    Leading up to Friday’s West Suburban Gold game at Proviso East, Willowbrook coach Nick Hildreth issued a challenge to his seniors – to finish games. None took it to heart more than Josh Berry, who had the kind of night you don’t soon forget. The senior tallied 100 rushing yards with 3 rushing touchdowns, 65 receiving yards, an interception and 215 punting yards to help Willowbrook get a 35-14 victory, its first of the season.

    As teammates hoisted Morton kicker Rodolfo Villalon on their shoulders, Willowbrook’s football players were left in stunned pain. Villalon’s 37-yard field goal in the waning seconds lifted the Mustangs to Saturday’s 17-16 West Suburban Gold Conference win over Willowbrook on its homecoming in Villa Park. The Warriors (0-5, 0-2) dealt with the pain of the moment as well as the realization that their fifth loss means elimination from playoff qualification.

    The home stands were filled and the crowd was roaring well before York took the field Friday night for its homecoming game against Willowbrook. It didn’t take long for the Dukes to give their fans something more to cheer for, beating the Warriors 42-7.
